Weekley is “back” after win at Colonial

Boo Weekley shot a final-round 66 to win the Crowne Plaza Invitational, his first win on the PGA Tour since the 2008 RBC Heritage at Harbour Town.
He finished at 14-under par (266) at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas for his the third win of his career, holding off a strong field of challengers including Matt Kuchar, Zach Johnson, Tim Clark and Jordan Speith.
“We’re back,” said Weekley, who has struggled with a shoulder injury during the past three seasons that affected his game for much of the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
Click here to see the clubs Weekley had in the bag at Colonial.
Weekley trailed Scott Stallings by three shots before Stallings clunked a chip shot and a bunker shot consecutively at No. 15, leading to a double bogey. Meanwhile, the Milton, Fla. native was reeling off three straight birdies to take a two-shot lead that he would not relinquish.
Just when it seemed as though Weekley would be in for a fight as Kuchar and Johnson each rolled in birdies to close within one, Boo drained a 30-foot birdie putt of his own at the difficult par-3 No. 13 to stretch the lead back to two shots.
Colonial is often called “Hogan’s Alley” — Hogan won five professional tournaments there in 1946, 1947, 1952, 1953 and 1959. In his win, Weekely channeled Hogan with outstanding iron play all week long, leading the field in proximity to the hole with laser-like precision, especially down the stretch hitting it close on Nos. 14, 16 and 17.
Playing in the group behind Weekley, Kuchar was unable to make any birdies after No. 12 and could not apply any pressure. Weekley made it look effortless by missing just one fairway and one green on the inward nine.
Kuchar rolled in a long birdie at No. 18 to finish one back at 13-under par. Zach Johnson finished two back at 12-under.
Also continuing to play well was Jordan Speith, who played collegiate golf at the University of Texas. Speith shot a final-round 67 to finish in a tie for seventh, his fourth top-10 finish of the season and earned himself a spot in the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis in two weeks.
With the win, Weekley earns $1.152 million and 500 FedEx Cup points. He is also entered into the field for the 2013 PGA Championship, 2014 Hyundai Tournament of Champions and 2014 Masters. Also, considering his exceptional play in the 2008 Ryder Cup, he also puts himself squarely in contention for a bid to play on the American President’s Cup team in September.

“Back” is relative. Have you watched golf in 2013 when Tiger wasn’t winning? Compared to what he’s accomplished in the past, Boo is back.
