U.S. Open play suspended (darkness)

Round 1 play of the U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club was suspended at 8:22 p.m. due to darkness.

Play was suspended twice during the day — at 8:36 a.m. due to a line of severe thunderstorms in the area, which caused a three-hour delay, and at 6:10 p.m., which caused a 45 minute delay.

The leader in the club house is Phil Mickelson, who shot a 3-under 67 after catching a red-eye flight from San Diego that landed him in Philadelphia just hours before his tee time.

One shot ahead of Mickelson is Luke Donald, who is 4-under through 13 holes. Peter Hedblom, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson , Matthew Goggin and Alistair Presnell are two shots back at 2-under.

Tiger Woods, who is playing with Scott and Rory McIlroy (even through 11 holes), is 2-over with a short putt left for par on No. 10.
