Duke wins his first at the Travelers

Published

It took Ken Duke 187 tries, but the 44-year-old from Hope, Arkansas, finally won his first PGA Tour event at the Travelers Championship.

Duke shot a final-round 66 to finish 12-under, a score that looked to be good enough to win after runner-up Chris Stroud’s second shot to No. 18 hopped over the green. But Stroud holed an improbable chip to force a playoff, which sent the players back to the TPC River Highland’s finishing hole to settle the tie.

Both players made par on No. 18 in the first playoff hole, but Duke nestled a sand wedge to within tap-in range on No. 18 in the second playoff hole to force Stroud’s hand. After Stroud missed his birdie putt on the right side, the tournament was finally Duke’s.

Duke received one of the best bounces of the week at No. 10 at TPC River Highlands, where his badly pulled iron shot looked to be headed into the trees. But it ricocheted out of trouble to within a few feet of the cup — a putt that Duke would make for birdie.

He capitalized on the good break by making three more birdies on the back nine, but one of the most important scores was a par No. 18, where he hit his tee shot wildly to the right. Duke was able to advance his second shot close enough to the green to setup a long putt from the fringe, which he lagged to within a few feet and converted for par.

The door was opened for both Duke and Stroud by Bubba Watson, who had the lead at 13-under before making a triple bogey on the par-3 16th hole. Watson, who won the tournament in 2010, finished in fourth place at 10-under.

Graham DeLaet, a Canadian who announced that he would donate $1000 for every birdie and $2500 for every eagle to relief efforts in Calgary, finished at 11-under to finish in third place. He made 17 birdies at TPC River Highlands, which means he will donate $17,000 to aid relief efforts — an amount that will be matched by PGA Tour Canada.

pleased to see this fella winning. He got some help from the allmighty and Bubba. Guess this win will keep him going for a while.
