Rose Opts Out of AT&T National

Published

on

Justin Rose, who won the U.S. Open earlier this month, has withdrawn from the AT&T National due to fatigue. Rose’s absence at Tiger Woods’ event means two big names have withdrawn just recently — the other one obviously being Woods.

Rose was in contention at last week’s Travelers Championship the week after his U.S. Open victory, but he looked tired when he made three bogies in his last 10 holes to finish in a tie for 13th place.

The 32-year-old has won the AT&T National before, in 2010, so it is worth noting that he isn’t withdrawing because he hasn’t fared well or he doesn’t particularly like this tournament.

Individuals who win the U.S. Open typically go through these exhaustion-related periods right after the already very grueling Open layout and difficult conditions. And as weekend golfers know, Monday mornings, after a “fun” round with friends with very little at stake, can often mean not wanting to get up to go to work.

Rose looked a bit tired just making that quick appearance on the David Letterman Show, reading the Top 10 list. He probably flew back to London at some point as well to meet family and friends.

Much of mental and physical tiredness has to do with all the attention that these golfers garner after a major and the number of appearances they are obligated to attend. Lucas Glover, after he’d won the Open at Bethpage Black in 2009, indicated that he had some idea of what Tiger and Phil Mickelson went through on a regular basis as they were golf superstars who command a tremendous amount of attention and scrutiny. He clearly indicated that he would not be comfortable collecting all this attention all the time.

This same situation happened with Darren Clarke after he won the British Open in 2011. He admitted later that the win took something out of him, and his play showed it the rest of the year. In his next four starts that year, outside of a fourth-place finish at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, Clarke finished T38, T68 and missed the cut.

Johnnie Lee was born in the second largest city in South Korea -- Pusan. At the age of one, he moved to the largest city in Canada, Toronto. At the age of nine, his family once again moved to the second largest city in the United Staes, Los Angeles. He now resides in Irvine, Calif. He is a golf junkie who has to curb his enthusiasm for golf because of his other more important obligations: his wife, Sarah, and his two kids, Jayden and Connor.

Rose deserves some time off. He finally got his 1st Major, and I was surprised he even played last week. You KNOW he had to quaff a few pints with his buddies back home after his US Open win, and had to be mentally exhausted and physically drained last week. After the Ryder cup and his Open win, the sky is the limit for Rose.

Also worth noting that his 2010 victory came at Aronimink, not Congressional.
