Snedeker is in the driver’s seat in Canada

Published

Brandt Snedeker took the lead at the RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club on Saturday firing a 9-under 63 after Hunter Mahan withdrew from the tournament with a family-first decision.

Mahan, despite holding the 36-hole lead by two strokes, admirably packed up his sticks before his weekend round began when he learned his wife had gone into labor with their first child at their home in Dallas, Texas. He received the phone call on the range in a slight drizzle, and withdrew shortly after as play was delayed due to thunderstorms in the area.

His lead seemed safe going into the weekend, barring catastrophic play or, in this case, a baby on the way. Mahan’s top-10 finishes in both the U.S. and British Opens were proof of his fine play of late, but the five-time PGA Tour champion will have to wait until his next outing to add to his career win total.

Mahan has left the tournament in the hands of fellow Americans and Ryder Cup teammates Brandt Snedeker, Matt Kuchar, and Dustin Johnson.

“With the way everything flipped and Hunter leaving, I have a great shot to win the tournament,” said Snedeker who finished just outside the top-10 at last week’s British Open, and takes the 54-hole lead into Sunday. “The leaderboard is wide open now.”

Kuchar, who fired a third-round 64 to put himself at 12-under for the tournament, added similar sentiments:

“It kind of gives the rest of a chance right now with him (Mahan) not in the field. I think we all expected him to just increase his lead and continue playing some really good golf.”

Dustin Johnson sits at 11-under par and 3-strokes back of Snedeker after a Saturday 63, with an eagle on the 18th hole. Johnson learned of Mahan’s departure after his round today, but added, “Obviously there’s no reason why he wouldn’t go, and obviously prayers go out and hopefully everything goes alright.”

The group of Americans will be vying for the top spot in Oakville, Ontario, while Mahan tends to his family priority.

PGA Tour rookie David Lingmerth of Sweden sits in second-place after a round of 65 on Saturday. He will hope to beat out the crowd of Americans at the top of the leaderboard.

He played on the Hawaii Pacific University Men's Golf team and earned a Masters degree in Communications. He also played college golf at Rutgers University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.

Besides this being one of the best days in Mahan’s life, ultimate trump card in an argument.
