Presidents Cup qualifiers set: Stricker, Johnson secure final spots

Published

Following the conclusion of the Deutsche Bank Championship Monday, the 10 qualifying spots for the 2013 U.S. Presidents Cup team have been set, as have the 10 spots on the International team. Captains Fred Couples and Nick Price will announce their captain’s picks Wednesday.

Steve Stricker and Zach Johnson secured the final two non-captain’s pick roster spots Monday. Stricker fired a final-round 67 at the Deutsche Bank Championship to finish two shots behind Henrik Stenson. With the second-place finish, Stricker moved from No. 11 to No. 7 in the final standings to earn his spot on the U.S. team.

Stricker, 46, has played quality golf in 2013 as he heads towards his Champions Tour years. The PGA Tour’s best semi-retired golfer notched six top-10 finishes in 11 starts on tour this year, including two seconds. He had not competed since the PGA Championship heading into the Deutsche Bank, but showed no signs of rust en route to a four-day total of 20-under. The Wisconsin native was just as good in 2012, winning the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and notching seven top 10s.

Zach Johnson needed a 26-foot birdie on his final hole of the Deutsche Bank Championship to earn a roster spot. After skipping The Barclays to attend his brother’s wedding, Johnson’s status looked to be in doubt. However, the birdie at the last earned him just enough money to move ahead of Webb Simpson.

Johnson, for his part, is hoping the man he bumped out will make the squad as a captain’s pick.

“I want Webb on the team,” Johnson said. “I know how he plays.”

On the International side, Canada’s Graham DeLaet was the only late addition. The Canadian fired rounds of 67-68-62-69 to finish third at the Deutsche Bank Championship and move to No. 8 in the International Team standings. With his roster spot, DeLaet became only the second Canadian to qualify for The Presidents Cup (the other being Mike Weir).

Presumptive captain’s pick Jordan Spieth did well in his final chance to impress Captain Couples, firing a final-round 62. Spieth finished 22nd in the Presidents Cup standings. However, as a rookie on the Tour this year, he only had a chance to earn points in one year, as compared to the other contenders, who all had two years to make their cases.

“In my mind, the only way to make a statement was play great golf the last few weeks,” Spieth said. “And I feel really solid about today’s round, going forward into the next event. And whatever happens on Wednesday happens on Wednesday. I’m very, very happy with today and that’s kind of what’s on my mind right now.”
