Picks and Preview: Web.com Tour Championship

Published

on

With the PGA Tour’s Tour Championship behind us, it’s time for the Web.com’s Tour Championship. And as multiple parties have stated, the former Tour Championship determines a player’s tax bracket, the latter, whether he’ll be playing in the major leagues. Indeed, for as much as we hear about the “every stroke counts” mentality that permeates the FedExCup Playoffs, what that competition amounts to, for many,  is post-major season bonus money.

Sure, Henrik Stenson was happy to win the Tour Championship and the $10 million annuity, but Matt Kuchar—who finished tied for 26th—he’d likely have enjoyed at week at home in Sea Island with his family just the same. For the participants in the Web.com Tour Championship who have yet to secure their tour cards, finishing inside the top 25 (really, the top 37 as 10 of the current top 25 already have secured cards) will ensure that they’re playing for winning shares of $1 million, rather than $100,000.

128 players will head to TPC Sawgrass (the Dye’s Valley course). The 6,864 yards, par 70, which Opened in 1987, isn’t as widely known as its sister course, the Stadium Course, but the track rates as one of the toughest on the Web.com Tour.

Here’s a look at who could not only punch their PGA Tour ticket, but win the final event of the Web.com Tour Finals.

John Peterson

Presently fourth in the Web.com Tour Finals, John Peterson didn’t finish worse than fifth in the first three Finals events. Given the momentum the LSU grad carried into the off week, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him near the top of the leaderboard again. No one has hit more greens in regulation on the Web.com tour this year than Peterson, and at a track that demands precision, his accuracy could spell victory. Indeed, it’s difficult to make the case that any golfer is more likely to win this week than Peterson.

Ben Martin

Ben Martin currently sits in the eighth spot of the Finals leaderboard. He played well at the Chiquita Classic and the Nationwide Children’s, finishing sixth and eighth, respectively. Already a winner twice on tour this year, Martin is comfortable at Dye’s Valley, where he finished third last year. Martin is a solid pick as both a “horse for the course” and a golfer who is in the midst of a hot streak. Aside from Peterson, the wagering inclined have to feel as good about as anyone else in the field.

Ryo Ishikawa

After a disappointing showing at the Hotel Fitness Championship, Ryo Ishikawa rebounded with solid performances in the next two Finals events. The Bashful Prince made 13 of 23 cuts on the main circuit this year. Although he’s been burdened by a balky putter (173rd in strokes gained-putting on the PGA Tour), Ishikawa certainly has the talent to rise to the occasion in Florida this week.

Andrew Svoboda

Currently second in the Finals standings, Andrew Svoboda won the Chiquita Classic and then finished tied for 28th at the Nationwide Children’s and is due for a rebound this week. Look for him to to be motivated to regain the top spot this week. The veteran of 18 PGA Tour starts this year shouldn’t be intimidated by the venue, and he is well-rounded enough statistically to contend this week.

Sean O’Hair

It’s been a rough year for Sean O’Hair, who finished 170th in 2013 FedEx Cup points. The four-time PGA Tour winner has had two strong finishes in the Web.com Tour Finals, however, finishing tied for 11th at the Hotel Fitness Championship and T17 at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship.

TPC Sawgrass’ Valley Course is different than the Stadium Course, but not enough to ignore the several near misses he’s had at The Players in his career. Expect him to play well this week on the other side of TPC Sawgrass’ property, where his length off the tee will set up several eagle opportunities on the course’s very gettable par 5s.
