Watch Rory McIlroy hit a 436-yard drive

Published

on

What’s more fun than driving a driveable par-4? When you’re Rory McIlroy, it’s driving a usually non-driveable par-4.

McIlroy’s first-round 64 at the Aberdeen Scottish Open including a 436-yard bomb off the 13th tee that found the front-right portion of the putting surface. Sure, the hole plays downhill and McIlroy was benefitted by a favorable wind direction, but that shouldn’t take away from the awesomeness 25-year-old’s power and precision with the big stick.

McIlroy likely won’t be hitting that many drivers at next week’s Open Championship at Hoylake, which historically favors conservative plays off its tees, but his game seems to be shaping up nicely for the season’s third major championship.

Also, you have to think about how closely trimmed those fairways are…the course I mentioned below is cut at .625…these pros are playing fairways that are basically trimmed to .250…most greens are at .125

I swing around 120-122, sometimes more if I need it and downhill, downwind with those rock hard fairways this is easily doable. I play a course in the USA in SC during the summer time at sea level with VERY FIRM fairways and can hit a baby draw 350-380 depending on the wind…not even downhill.

Nope — whether or not anyone likes it — that ball was ripped. At 436 even with the favorable conditions that ball with calm conditions at sea level would have still gone 350 — which is just about right given his Trackman stats. Haters will hate… Hell of a drive.

Wonder if those long drives of his help him win tournaments

Well his club head speed’s about 10 mph faster than mine so I guess I could have hit a 400 yarder there myself. Oh wait I’d been in the rough 150 yds back!

Downhill, down wind, extremely firm fairways. No big deal.

I do hope you’re joking, I seen this in person and nobody else could get near this far.

The failure of any other pro in the field to do the same suggests you are wrong sir. Rory was no the only one to hit driver, was the only one to reach the green.

    That’s only around 428

      Yes, “ONLY” 428 yards.

No it’s 436 yards. it’s on the sign behind him. Also a meter is longer than a yard so you’d still be wrong.
