Robert Allenby kidnapped, beaten, robbed in Hawaii

PGA Tour player Robert Allenby was kidnapped from a Hawaii bar, then beaten, robbed and left in a park 6 miles away, the Golf Channel is reporting.

Allenby played in the Sony Open in Hawaii, where he shot 71-71 to miss the cut. The kidnapping occurred Friday night at Amuse Wine Bar near Waikiki, according to Allenby’s caddie, Mick Middlemo.

Allenby was at the bar with Middlemo and a friend, Anthony Puntoriero, according to the Australian Associated Press. They were not with him at the time of the kidnapping.

Allenby, 43, told the AAP that he believes he was drugged before he was taken to an underground parking and knocked out. Video surveillance footage showed him leaving the bar with a group of five-to-six people.

“I didn’t think I was going to survive this one,” Allenby told the AAP. “I was separated from my friend in the bar after we paid the tab at 10:48 p.m. and he went to the bathroom, and next thing you know I’m being dumped in a park miles away.”

The Australian golfer was robbed of his wallet and its contents, as well as his cell phone. He sustained injuries to his face, and awoke Saturday morning “groggy with no recollection of what had happened to him,” according to Middlemo.

Allenby was picked up Saturday morning by a good samaritan and returned to the Kalaha Hotel, where he stayed during the week.

According to the report, Allenby has been able “to piece together the events of Friday night” and returned to the wine bar on Saturday with police to review surveillance footage.

“We have some names and numbers and they have some leads to follow up, so I am confident they will get the guys,” Allenby told the AAP.

Allenby is scheduled to play the Humana Challenge in La Quinta, Calif., which begins Jan. 22.

He has won 4 PGA Tour events (2000, 2001) and is 27th on the Tour’s career money list with more than $27 million in earnings. He is currently 271st in the Official World Golf Rankings.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
