The 10 Best Quotes from Round 1 at the U.S. Open

Published

on

Day 1 of the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay has come and gone. Predictably, there was plenty of grumbling. Predictably, too, three power players sit atop the leaderboard: Dustin Johnson (-5), Henrik Stenson (-5) and Patrick Reed (-4).

And perhaps also predictably, depending on your faith in Tiger Woods to ever play golf like Tiger Woods again, the former world No. 1 carded a horrifying, career-worst-round-in-a-U.S.-Open 80, third-worst in the field.

Check out the 10 best quotes from the pros’ post-round pressers and tweets.

Sergio Garcia (via Twitter)

“I think a championship of the caliber of @usopengolf deserves better quality green surfaces that we have this week but maybe I’m wrong!”

Tiger Woods

“But the bright side is at least I kicked Rickie’s butt today.”

Marc Warren

“The elevation change around here is unusual for links golf. You are going to feel it at the end of the day. I said to my caddie, Ken, that come Sunday you are going to know you have been in a golf tournament the last week. Your legs are definitely going to know. It’s tough walking.”

Henrik Stenson

“The USGA can make this place as hard as they want to, especially if you get a bit of wind and start tucking those pins away and play it longer. That could be a real monster.”

Justin Rose

“I really hope the greens roll better in the morning because it wasn’t a lot of fun out there in the afternoon. I couldn’t see a putt staying on the line I hit it on and makes it a little frustrating at times. I’m hoping I can get some good looks at it tomorrow and the ball rolls a little truer, so I feel like I can make some birdies.”

Phil Mickelson

“I thought it played as we expected. I thought there was nothing hokey or crazy with any pin positions or how it played. I thought it was difficult. I think the biggest challenge is that the green speeds are different from green to green. That’s going to wreak havoc on our touch. And that’s the only thing I could possibly think of that is not really positive, because I think it’s been very well done.”

Rory McIlroy

“They are not the best that I’ve ever putted on. I still feel like if you make a good enough stroke and you have the right speed, there’s a good enough chance the ball will go in. I need to find a rhythm in my stroke over the next three days, work a bit on the putting green and hopefully it will be better tomorrow.”

Dustin Johnson

“The greens here, they’re real fine, they’re a little bumpy, but that’s how — it’s just like that for everyone. So I think speed’s important so you can get those close tap-in pars. But I didn’t notice anything today. I thought they were all pretty similar.”

Billy Horschel (via Twitter)

“What’s disappointing about @usopengolf is the fans not being about to walk around the course/get close enough to most of the greens to cheer. Fans are having a hard time walking the course. They can barely see anything from outside the ropes. I would be pissed if I paid a lot of money for tickets and could barely see the top players hit golf shots.”

Lee Westwood

“I’ll bet there’s some interesting tweets and comments about these greens at Chambers Bay. And the condition of them.”

Respect to Billy Horschel for actually thinking of spectators who also pay some of tour players salary. Cheers mate!
