Monday Tour Mash: Fowler wins, Rory’s Nike shoes

Deutsche Bank Championship

Henrik Stenson was able to break away from all but Rickie Fowler on Labor Day Monday at TPC Boston. Locked in step in the final twosome of the Deutsche Bank Championship, Stenson and Fowler were separated by one stroke at the outset and it was a single blow that defined the outcome.

With a one-stroke lead in hand, Stenson’s tee shot on the par-three 16th hole found water and it was Fowler who strode to the 17th with the lead. Neither could take advantage of legitimate birdie runs on the final two holes, and the man in orange gathered in an 11-inch putt on No. 18 to take the trophy.

European Tour

Lee Slattery and Estanislao Goya played hot potato with the lead on Sunday at the M2M Russian Open. In the end, the 37-year-old Slatter had enough magic to secure a second Euro Tour victory by a stroke over the Argentine. Slattery’s sleight of hand included a bomb on the 14th green, followed by a Tiger-esque chip-in from behind and above the 17th felt pad. Goya birdied the 72nd hole to catch the champion’s attention, but Slattery found a way to hole his par putt and escape with the M2M trophy.

Rory’s Kicks

Sweet. Even Nike has to move the swoosh around from time to time. His orange-piped cleats saw a toe swoosh for the first time. Rory didn’t show all that well at Boston, ending in a tie for 33rd. His final-round 66, five-under par, did certainly gain him and the Goddess some television time on Sunday.

Spieth Update

I don’t think it’s the irons. Jordan Spieth, who switched to Titleist’s AP2 Forged 716 irons  for last week’s tournament but switched back to his AP2 714’s this week, missed a second-consecutive cut at the Deutsche Bank Championship. At The Barclays, the Texan missed the weekend by five strokes, while at Boston this week, the margin was three blows. People forget how well he putted, how obscenely-well he putted, over the summer. While all the strokes between the top spot and his missed cuts can’t be attributed to the flat stick, confidence ebbs and flows with the putter.

Learn To Go Low

It’s those secondary tours where the magic happens. Six fellows shot four rounds in the 60s last week at the Wildfire Invitational on the Mackenzie (PGA Tour Canada) Tour. Leading the way was Christopher Ross of Dundas, Ontario, in the home country. His 69-66-64-64 afforded a four-stroke margin over runner-up David Skinns of England. Five of these fellows will graduate to the Web.Com Tour next year, with the knowledge that they can low ball when needed.
