Tour Mash: Justin Thomas wins his first, Dubuisson settles in

CIMB Classic
Justin Thomas knew that winning on the PGA Tour would be difficult. He was on the 2013 U.S. Walker Cup team that included Patrick Rodgers, Bobby Wyatt, Michael Kim, Max Homa and Michael Weaver, yet none of that talented crew had yet won on the PGA Tour. On Sunday, Thomas shook off a wretched, but familiar chunked shot to dispatch a scorching Adam Scott (final-round 63) and win the CIMB Classic in Malaysia by one stroke.
Despite a double-bogey on the previous hole, Thomas drew on his confidence on No. 15 and hit an approach shot that led to the first of three consecutive birdies down the stretch.
“That shot I hit on No. 15 may have been the best shot I hit this week,” Thomas said. “It was kind of between clubs. It was just tough to squeeze it back there, and I just kind of stepped up and knew I needed to hit a golf shot. And I hit probably the best shot I hit all week, so that kind of calmed my nerves.”

Blue Bay LPGA
Kim Sei-Young had previously won a pair of 2015 events on the LPGA Tour, so the putt on No. 18 at the Blue Bay LPGA on China’s Hainan Island was not entirely unfamiliar territory. It covered 6 feet and sent her heart a-pounding, but it went the critical 4 inches down into the bottom of the cup for birdie and her third LPGA win.
Kim admitted that her goals have changed. With the third victory, she moves to No. 4 in the Race to the CME Globe. Now the Ochoa Invitational in Mexico and the CME Championship in Florida enter her scope. As for No. 1 in the world, that can wait. For Sei-Young, only Olympic Gold in 2016 matters.
With her 2-under total, Kim was able to hold off unheralded Kim Kaufmann, whose 69 was the only score under 70 on a challenging Sunday, and Stacy Lewis, who once again came close, only to have her train derailed by a late bogey.
Toshiba Classic
Duffy Waldorf lit up Newport Country in the third round of the Toshiba Classic with 11 birdies and seven pars (that’s 60, folks) to take the overnight lead. Joe Durant made a run with 62 on Sunday, including an eagle on No. 18, but it wasn’t enough. Waldorf shot 66 on Sunday, including a birdie on No. 18 to secure his first Champions Tour win.
Turkish Airlines Open
Victor Dubuisson recently said adieu to the PGA Tour, revealing that he never established a comfort level there. His return to the European Tour could not have been more successful. The Frenchman followed up a bit of Tarzan from the trees on No. 10 with a chip-in eagle on No. 11. At the end of the Turkish Airlines Open in Antalya, Dubuisson stood emotionally in the clutches of his caddie, one clear of South Africa’s Jaco Van Zyl and the rest of the field. The TAO began the European Tour’s Final Series, with two events in Shanghai and the Tour Championship in the UAE to follow.
PGA Tour Latinoamerica
The Roberto De Vicenzo Punta del Este Open Copa NEC is an umbrella of a title. For Lanto Griffin of the U.S., it’s a first step toward the Web.com and PGA tours. Griffin played consistent golf from the start to finish two strokes clear of the field at 9-under. His first PGA Tour LatinoAmerica victory moved him to 21st position with four tournaments left on the schedule. Midway leader and former U.S. Amateur champion Steven Fox was unable to make anything happen on the weekend, finishing in fifth place.
Jamie Fay
The high that I experienced at Bandon last week was obliterated by the most crushing of lows. I sent an email to Chambers Bay on Monday to firm up plans for a Friday round at the 2015 U.S. Open site. The crushing response was this: my contact, assistant general manager Jamie Fay, was killed by a falling tree while driving home in September. His daughter’s life had been spared. After the stun dissipated, I was reminded of the vagaries of life and our uncertain hold on it. A memorial fundraiser for Jamie’s family was established online.
