Numbers of Interest: Jim Herman’s final-round 68

Ohio-native Jim Herman, who held a share of the 54-hole lead with Jamie Lovemark at 11-under 205, made five birdies and just one bogey to post a 4-under 68 to take his first career PGA Tour title.
The shot of the day/tournament/Herman’s life: A holed chip for birdie at the par-3 16th hole.

First: the pitch-in. According to ShotLink. Herman missed the green with his 191-yard tee shot at the par-3 before holing a 39’9’’ pitch.
It’s worth noting that ShotLink placed GC of Houston as the third most difficult course to scramble from the rough at last year, with players getting up and down just 45.4 percent of the time. For the season, Herman is 45th on Tour in scrambling at 62.35 percent.
Herman then parred the 488-yard par-four 17th hole and piped his drive 316 yards to a tight landing area over water with the tournament on the line. The 18th hole saw 531 balls find the water from 2006-2015, so the drive is a tough one, to be sure.
The 18th played as the most difficult hole at GC of Houston, with the field averaging 4.391 (.391 strokes over par). And further, it was the fourth most difficult non-major finishing hole on tour last year.
So, standing on the tee box, the untested Herman had his work cut out for him.
Over the course of his weekend rounds of 67, 68, Herman found 9 of 14 fairways, 15 of 18 greens, with 28 putts for his third round, and 10 of 14 fairways, 12 of 18 greens, with 27 putts for his final round.
Herman ranked 40th in the field for driving distance at 290.6 yards. He tied for 16th in fairways hit (69.6 percent) and for 10th in greens in regulation 73.6 percent. At 31.8’’, Herman was first in proximity to the hole.
His strokes gained numbers for the week:
- Tee-to-green: 2.044 (8)
- Putting: 1.644 (4)
- Total: 3.688 (1)
Way to step up, Mr. Herman, and best of luck at Augusta National.

What a cool story to see someone who’s toiled in the minor leagues for so long finally get that first win. The emotion he showed in his post round interview when asked about playing at the Masters was really cool to see. That was a fun final round to watch.
