Tour Mash: Driscoll wins in Nashville, Sei Young Kim earns playoff victory

Published

on

Believe it or don’t, the golf world was not focused solely on two sides of the Pennsylvania Turnpike this week. Professional golf was played in Nashville, Grand Rapids, the Czech Republic and Thailand. Here’s a rundown of the events that didn’t have a rules controversy and didn’t crown Dustin Johnson as champion.

Web.com Tour: Driscoll claims 2nd professional victory

James Driscoll finished runner-up in the 2000 U.S. Amateur, then embarked on a professional career that saw him win a Web.com event, then lose two playoffs on the PGA Tour during the first decade of the 2000s.

Yet to solve the mystery of playing and winning on golf’s grandest stages (maybe it’s the mohawk and the hat?), the journeyman revived his career this week with his second Web.com Tour win by three strokes at the Nashville Golf Open. Driscoll trailed hotshot Wesley Bryan by two after Round 1, but never looked back and coasted to victory over Brian Campbell. Joel Dahmen and Mark Anderson tied for third, one more stroke back.

LPGA: Sei Young Kim wins playoff, muddies Olympic waters

I have no doubt that South Korea could supply five, four-lady Olympic golf squads and that each one could contend for a gold medal. Lexi Thompson may have had the overnight lead at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give in Grand Rapids, Mich., and Carlota Ciganda may have tied for first at the end of regulation, but neither stood a chance against Kim.

With golf ball buried in Oakmont-esque rough, the 23 year old slashed her approach to 3 feet on the first playoff hole, then drained the putt to win her fifth LPGA Tour title, and third in three playoff tries. Spain’s Ciganda played a marvelous final round of four-under 67, but was helpless in the playoff as she made bogey to end her chances. Two stokes out of the playoff, alone in third, was In Gee Chun.

Ladies European Tour: Nanna wins on Father’s Day

Truthfully, it’s probably not Father’s Day in any other country on the earth, but it made for a fun headline. Nanna Koerstz Madsen, a 21-year-old Dane by way of the University of South Carolina, closed with 65 to win the Tipsport Masters in Pilsen by five strokes over Pamela Pretswell of Scotland and Stacey Keating of Australia. Madsen was the only golfer to break 70 in each of the tournament’s rounds, and her 6-under performance on Sunday was too much for the competition to match. Despite a two-hour weather delay, Madsen maintained her composure and eased into victory lane.

Scott Hend by one at Asian Tour’s Queen’s Cup

Scott Hend turned in a masterful 64 on Saturday in Thailand, but he needed every birdie he could muster to hold off Gunn Charoenkul and win the Queen’s Cup on the island of Koh Samui. Charoenkul began the week with an eagle two on the tournament’s first hole, and played a bogey-free round of 5-under 66 on Day 4. His 18th hole birdie meant that Hend had to make no worse than par on the closing par five. Hend won for the second time in Thailand this season, defeating home country challengers Charoenkul and third-round leader Prom Meesawat, who finished tied for third.
