Akshay Bhatia wins Korn Ferry event with caddie who ‘doesn’t know anything about golf’

Golf is on a roll and the new generation have started already.

On just his first official and sixth overall start on the Korn Ferry Tour, 19-year-old Akshay Bhatia eased away down the stretch to win by three shots at the Bahamas Great Exuma Classic, thus becoming only the third teenage winner on the tour, along with Jason Day and Sungjae Im.

Put up as one of our players to follow at the end of 2021, Bhatia has been on the ‘watch list’ since finishing 9th at the 2020 Safeway Classic, but three birdies in four closing holes at the difficult Sandals Resort suggests the powerful left-hander has plenty more to give.

Whilst impressive in contention and victory, the bigger story involves the winning caddie – his girlfriend, Presleigh Schultz, a content creator on social media who, by her own admission, knows little about the sport.

Less than a year ago, the golfer privately messaged Presleigh via one of her social media accounts, and within eight months, The Korn Ferry Tour see fit to tweet: ”It all started with an Instagram DM and a professional golf dream.”

Akshay expanded on the tease, saying, ”I was playing in Valero Texas Open so I was like ‘Hey, let’s meet up.’ You know, she’s never watched golf. Her little brother plays a little bit, but didn’t really know what was going on. And, so we met there and now she’s caddying in my first Korn Ferry event as a member, which is awesome.”

Having decided to miss college and turn professional in his late teens, early indications have been mixed, a bundle of missed-cuts offset by that effort at Silverado and a weekend’s play at last year’s US Open at Torrey Pines, but yesterday’s victory puts that all to one side.

Bhatia admitted, ”Well, I ended up turning pro early, didn’t go to college. Got my high school diploma in like three years, two years, and then turned pro when I was 17. So, it was a pretty big jump.”

After this week’s victorious journey, Schultz posted, ”What a week, so proud of @akshaybhatia_1 for his first win on the @kornferrytour such a cool feeling to be by his side this week with him!!”

That isn’t all, though, if the player is to be believed.

“It’s pretty cool to think that at 19-years-old, I can play on the Korn Ferry Tour and I’m a member and you know, I earned every ounce of it. But there’s still bigger goals I want to achieve.”

He’s certainly on his way.

CBS’s Sunday Masters coverage slammed by golf fans

While Sunday was a dramatic day at the Masters, many golf fans were left feeling frustrated by the CBS final round coverage.

There were plenty of moments that golf fans took to social media to air their frustrations on Sunday over, including a lack of shots being shown throughout the day, being behind the live action, confusion over the approach shots of the final group on 18, and providing an angle for the winning putt where the cup couldn’t be seen.

Here’s a look at some of the criticisms that were directed at the CBS coverage throughout the day on X:

The surprise club Tommy Fleetwood says is key to his Masters chances

Tommy Fleetwood goes in search for the first major victory of his career again this week, with the Englishman proving to be a popular pick at Augusta National.

Fleetwood’s best showing at Augusta came back in 2024 where he finished T3, and while speaking at his pre-tournament press conference, the 35-year-old emphasized the importance of his 9-wood in his pursuit of the green jacket.

Speaking on Tuesday to media, Fleetwood said:

“It’s a great 9-wood golf course. I think it’s always been — I can’t remember when I first put like a 9-wood in or a high lofted club, but it’s a perfect like 9-wood golf course. I’ve had that in the bag for a few years.”

The Englishman continued, revealing that his strategy for the week won’t just be to hit driver off the tee as much as possible:

“Yeah, it’s funny really because I know Augusta is probably associated with being fairly forgiving off the tee in a way, so you think you can whale around driver a little bit. But I don’t necessarily think that’s always the play for me. I think there’s holes that set up really well where I can draw it with the mini driver if I’m feeling less comfortable with the driver and things like that.”

That strategy he believes will make his TaylorMade Qi10 9-wood extra critical this week in Georgia:

“The biggest thing is the 9-wood for me. If I can put myself in position on the par-5s or the 4th long par-3, like it — for me, I can’t really hit that high 4-iron, so 9-wood helps me a lot.”
