McDowell wins the RBC Heritage

Graeme McDowell captured his second win on the PGA Tour, defeating fellow U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson in a one-hole sudden-death playoff at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, S.C.

McDowell’s final-round 69 in blustery wind conditions puts him in the winner’s circle for the first time since the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.

Simpson, last year’s U.S. Open champion, shot a final round 71, but handed McDowell the victory on the 73rd hole of the week.

On the only playoff hole, Simpson’s putt from off the green caught a gust of wind and rolled past the cup, leaving him a difficult 10-foot par putt. McDowell hit the fairway green and two-putted to secure his par and eventual victory. Simpson failed to force a second playoff hole, pushing his par putt to the right.

McDowell, a Northern Ireland native, was steady all day, carding three birdies and no bogies until his final hole of regulation. His hiccup on No. 18 — a three-putt bogey — dropped him to 9-under. That left Simpson, who was 9-under going into No. 18, with a birdie-to-win, par-to-tie situation on the final hole in regulation, but he could only tie.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory until 6 p.m. in the Hilton Head Island area Sunday, with steady winds at 20 mph out of the Northeast, gusting to 40 to 45 mph. On a short and frighteningly tight course that requires placement, precision and strategy, gusting winds tested the players’ patience.

The final-round scores showed the formidable challenge the players faced at Hilton Head, with more players shooting in the 80s than in the 60s. Russell Henley, Luke Donald and McDowell all shot 69, which were the only sub-70 rounds of the day.

Charley Hoffmann held a two-shot lead over Webb Simpson going into the final round, and a four-shot lead over McDowell. Hoffmann seemed unthreatened by the impending breeze in an interview before the round, telling the course to “bring on the wind,” according to PGATour.com. His confidence did not translate to red numbers, however, as he carded only one birdie, five bogies and a double bogey en route to a final-round 77 and a T-6 finish.

On a day when birdies were rare, Luke Donald started red-hot on his opening nine Sunday, making the turn in 32. His momentum hit the brakes with bogies on Nos. 10, 13 and 15, and a disappointing back-nine 37 (2-over). Donald’s final-round 69 left him in a tie for third with Kevin Streelman.

Jerry Kelly rounded out the top five, finishing in fifth place after a solid final round 71.

Rookie Russell Henley, with a T-7 this week, posted his second top-10 finish of the year, which includes a win at the Sony Open in Hawaii earlier this season.

The Tour moves TPC Louisiana next week in Avondale, La., where Jason Dufner is the defending champion.

He played on the Hawaii Pacific University Men's Golf team and earned a Masters degree in Communications. He also played college golf at Rutgers University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.
