   When there is a strap to hold the putter in place then its anchored and non conforming..until then its still being held in place by two hands. Whether its swung or stroked, its being done with two hands not by the putter itself. Doesn’t matter whether we like the look of it or not, nothing non conforming here.

   Regardless of length, whether it’s beneficial or not to a player on any level, I believe the belly putter (not speaking of broomstick) should be banned. Reason being, I don’t believe any club should be hinged or anchored to any part of the body other than the two hands/arms that are attached to every other club in your bag when making a swing or put. Nick Faldo said it best, it’s a “golf swing”, not a “golf hinge”. I personally can’t look at someone using a belly putter, and say the same thing I would when using a traditional putter….”nice stroke”.

   It does create a different way to swing the putter. It has been shown not neccessarily to be any easier way to putt. Long putters came out at least 25 years ago much longer than 460cc drivers have been around. Practically everyone on tour uses a driver that size or close and only but a handful of the best players in the world use the long putter. If it were a better and an easier way to make putts wouldn’t everyone be foolish not to use it?

   Drastically changing the putting stroke is what bugs me. Not technology and how it improves the game.

   Mallet head putters were also created for the purpose to have more mass thru impact to improve yippy strokes. Plumber neck blades were designed to aid in alignment and to keep your hands leading into the ball to battle decelerating strokes. In fact all putters with perimeter weighting or an insert are to improve offcenter hits and increased MOI so its more difficult to miss those shorties. You are kidding yourself if you think swinging a long or belly putter improves your putting results that much. Good luck with your 8802/Bullseye! If my golfers come out and play more because they think the belly/long putter helps them a bit then we are growing the game. As for the drop from the hazard, I never said it should be the longest club in the bag, put the parameter to be no longer than the longest club in your bag. If your concern is to get an extra 2 inches on a drop, and you choose to use your 8802, check the bags of the competitors in your group. If they have that super long putter you can use theirs, its within the rules!

   The only reason for a long putter is to make up for bad strokes and yips. The more mass a pendulum has the easier it is to swing. You can’t say it isnt a benenfit. Also how can you say it doesnt matter if it is the longest club in your bag? Drop locations from hazards maybe. Comparing to a firm left side. Come on. Swinging 110 mph onto a solid foundation is nowhere near just swinging a slow long pendulum.

   Anchor to you arm like Langer?! He suggests you can still anchor it to your body! What’s the difference between the putter being as long or less than the longest club in your bag? This is talk to try and make yourself sound relavent.

   The club is not affixed to your body, it is held in place by “your hands”. The belly or long putter does not exhonerate a player from having to have touch and feel. It does not provide auto alignment. It doesn’t provide any more assistance in the stroke than hitting against a firm left side in the golf swing. At best this type of putting provides a better sight of the line that would be all.

   Let’s not ask the folks who are the best at playing at the game. Ask your local PGA professional who is trying to get anyone excited about playing this difficult game his opinion and whats best for the game.
