Kuchar, English set record at Franklin Templeton Shootout

Published

Golf’s silly season rolled on over the weekend with another limited field event, the Franklin Templeton Shootout. The former Shark Shootout is different, though, featuring 12 two-man teams playing three rounds with a variety of formats.

This is Greg Norman’s event, and he likes to mix things up a bit.

Despite the three different styles of play in the three rounds, the team of Matt Kuchar and Harris English set one record, and tied another in their win.

In Sunday’s scramble format, the team of Kuchar and Harris broke the tournament course record with a 14-under par 58 that gave them a seven-stroke victory. Their 54-hole total of 182 (34-under par) also put them in a tie with the team of Fred Couples and Raymond Floyd for tournament scoring record.

“It was a fun week,” Kuchar said. “This is one of my favorite events of the year. I wish we could have more team events. I realize during the year that it’s difficult but to mix up the formats and have a partner, so this is just a lot of fun. It’s nice to perform well.”

The defending champions — Kenny Perry and Sean O’Hair — got out to a great start in the first round, carding an eight-under 64 on the Tiburon Golf Club’s Gold Course. That left them in a three-way tie after the alternate shot format. Perry, the Champions Tour Player of the Year, said he was impressed with his partner’s play.

“It was a fun day for me,” he said. “When (O’Hair) poured it in from about 15 feet on the first hole I knew it was going to be a good day for us. We were never in any trouble.”

What Perry didn’t know was that the team of Matt Kuchar and Harris English was just getting warmed up. In round two, the better ball format, Kuchar/Harris posted the low score of the day (60) and found themselves sitting on a four-stroke lead heading into the final round.

Retief Goosen and Fredrick Jacobsen carded a 61 on the day to vault into second place, but both players knew it would be an uphill battle on Sunday. “Four shots behind tomorrow, we need something really low,” Goosen said.

But Sunday once again belonged to Kuchar and English, who made the course look even easier than the day before.

“It’s such a relaxing event,” Harris said. “It’s really cool being part of this event.”

Harris, not originally scheduled to play in the event, replaced Brandt Snedeker who withdrew after suffering a leg accident

Goosen and Jacobsen ended up alone in second place (27-under, 189), followed by Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood (26-under, 190).

Tournament host Greg Norman and partner Jonas Blixt finished in a tie for eighth place.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
