GolfWRX had two-time PGA Tour winner Scott Piercy join us for a LIVE Q&A with members on March 25 at 5 p.m. ET.

Unfortunately, Scott is out currently action for a few months due to elbow surgery. He suffered a torn flexor digitorum superficialis in his right arm, but agreed to take some time to give insight into PGA Tour life for GolfWRX members.

About

Piercy, 35, turned professional in 2001 and earned his PGA Tour card in 2009. In 2011, Piercy broke through for his first PGA Tour win at the Reno-Tahoe Open. He won again in 2012, this time at the RBC Canadian Open. The win propelled him to his best year ever on Tour, earning nearly $2.7 million and finishing 15th on the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup.

In 2013, Piercy recorded his best-ever finish in a major championship, a T5 at the PGA Championship at Oak Hill, and also played in The Masters for the first time, where he finished T54.

Piercy’s sponsors currently include Titleist, Izod, KeyedIn, Apex Systems and Wahwah. Click here to see the clubs in his bag as of the 2014 Humana Challenge

Scott Piercy: Whats up everyone! I’m excited to answer your questions today! Let’s get this started. if for some reason i dont get to your question today you can always follow me on twitter @ScottPiercyPGA and Instagram @scottpiercypga and scottpiercy.com and try to get those questions answered!

HiYa

GolfWRX Member QMany:  Thank you for taking the time to visit GolfWRX and answer questions. I really enjoyed the last conversation we had with Kevin Streelman. How long does it take for you to scout a new track? What are the steps to preparing for a new course/tournament? What advice would you give amateurs preparing and playing in tournaments?

What course has the toughest greens on Tour? What course is toughest off the tee?

Do you like to test a lot of equipment, or do you find something and stick with? What is the testing like to fit something in your bag?

Scott Piercy: I feel like after 4-5 times of looking at a course i have a good feel for it.  Main thing in learning courses is knowing the greens and areas around them.  I test things but not much beats out my gamers. If it’s better then it get in the bag.

GolfWRX Member NTKT10: Scott, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions, hope the healing process goes quickly for you.  How often do you spend time working on fundamentals like your grip, posture, alignment, ball position, etc. and do you have a tips for the rest of us?  What are some things (or nothing) that you tend to struggle with or lapse into bad habits?

Scott Piercy: Every time I practice I work on those things. My alignment is the hardest for me. I tend to aim too far right.

GolfWRX Member Staff_Blades: Scott, Do you think the pivotal moment to propel you to the tour was when you came back on the back nine to win the “Big Stakes” event against Ken Jarner at the Wynn.

Scott Piercy: I think it was a chain of events but that was in the chain.

GolfWRX Member CircleC29: Thanks for taking the time from your busy schedule to be here on GolfWRX!
Q: What piece of equipment have you added to your bag recently that has helped your game the most? And what is your best piece of advice for amateurs regarding practice? Thanks.

Scott Piercy: The lazer putter for praticing my putting.  Quality before quantity.

GolfWRX Member thatboygaule:  What does your pre-round warm up consist of ? Do you do any putting/chipping drills before you go out or just focus on warming up and getting a feel?

Scott Piercy: Obviously hitting balls to get a feel and get loose. Usually a few chips and then i putt but generally not any drills really. I might a chalk line on a green and work on that for a few min.

GolfWRX Member dan250yds:  Hey there Scott, question I would ask you is what advice can you give on a practice routine for the summertime?

Scott Piercy: Depends on how good you want to be.  If you want to make the tour then if the sun is up you should be practicing.

GolfWRX Member WVP:  Thanks for your time. Who are your favorite fellow pros to play with and why?

Scott Piercy: For some reason I really like playing with Carl Pettersson. Really good dude and has a funny caddy too.

GolfWRX Member seve1972:  Why do you still use the older model 690s??….would you ever switch?   What are the swing weights of your irons now?

Scott Piercy: Swing weight D4. Yes I would switch if I found better. I still use because I use weak lofts and the bounce fits the lofts the right way. New irons are too strong so when i bend to correct lofts the bounce is off.

GolfWRX Member Txstcatman:  Hi Scott, and welcome to WRX!
What advice would you give to the “Average Joe” who wants to find a way to save strokes in their game? Where would you tell them to focus their time in practice? Also, do you ever just stop at a course and play a round with strangers in a random grouping just because you felt like getting in a round? If so, when will you next be in Austin? 🙂

Scott Piercy: Practice more from 100 yards in to save more strokes.  No I generally don’t.  I get enough golf in! lol!

GolfWRX Member DirecTVTechGuy: Thank you! It is awesome to see a Professional take time out of his schedule to interact with Forum Members!  It’s a polarizing topic around here…. And maybe you won’t want to touch it…How much impact do you feel your Caddie ( Caddy ) has on your game?

Scott Piercy: Depends on the day.  Caddies can help alot and they can hurt a lot too!

GolfWRX Member cphrey: Lots of great questions in here! I am anxious to hear answers to them, but also would like you to comment on putting practice, and some good drills you do that we could try ourselves. Thanks Scott!

Scott Piercy: I recently got the lazer putter and that really helped me a lot.  3ft 4ft 5ft is a good drill.

GolfWRX Member OUZO Power:  Scott get well man. Question: I also play with the baseball grip. Actually a modified 10 finger grip. I dont overlap or cross the two fingers. Are we missing out with this grip as fir as control and distance? if not why dont more use it? What are the drawbacks of going with a 10 finger grip?

Scott Piercy: I don’t think so you have to be comfortable when you play and if your comfortable there are no drawbacks.

GolfWRX Member GoIrish17: Hey, Scott, thanks for stopping in to chat with us equipment dorks! I have a question or two… First, the ten finger baseball grip- how many times has someone tried to switch it, and how did that go? How many Burner fairways do you have stashed, do you have a source, or are you riding the same ones till they die? Best of luck in the future, and speedy recovery from the injury!

Scott Piercy: No one has tried to change it and they wouldn’t be able to anyway. My current coach didn’t notice for 2 years.  I have 4-5 [Burner fairways] stashed away.

GolfWRX Member xThor: Thanks for doing this! How important is testing new equipment, and at what point do you decide to put new equipment into competitive play? Pro’s perspective when fan’s yell random outbursts? What is the reaction of a pro to statements made by others. (Obviously the Patrick Reed comment about “top 5” was a big media frenzy) What is your favorite course you’ve played? How has rehabbing an injury effected your routine, and what has it changed about your game.

Scott Piercy: Lotsa questions lol! If the new equipment is better then it goes in. I generally laugh at random stuff. Pro’s reaction differ. I think they shouldn’t interview you right after you win on the last green because you’re not in the right frame of mind to make a correct public statement.  My injury has changed my game by not touching a club for a couple and my routine now is watching tv.

GolfWRX Member jabrch: Scott, what (and why?) are your 3 favorite courses you have played on the PGA Tour?

Scott Piercy: TPC Scottsdale because I play well there. Montreaux because I won there. Hamilton CC because I won there.

GolfWRX Member chiguy: Big thanks to Scott for doing this. Such a cool gesture! What has been the biggest challenge/surprise since you turned pro? Is there anything that you really didn’t anticipate? How much interaction do you have with other tour players off the course? What is the process of testing new equipment, whether it be with Titleist or another OEM? Can you pretty much get your hands on anything you want? Do you borrow it and return it to the tour van or rep after a certain amount of time?

Scott Piercy: Nothing too terribly crazy. We see each other alot and probly trying to get away from each other off the course. When it comes to testing they try to match what’s currently in the bag and then go from there. Pretty much anything but Titleist is my choice. Generally we don’t return if we keep it. If they make something and we don’t like it then we give it back.

GolfWRX Member moegolfer:  …What is your practice schedule during the day and honestly how much work do you have to put in? I understand a ton and there are no days off but is chasing the dream (in your opinion) far fetched?

Scott Piercy:  Practice schedule varies day to day. There are soo many areas of the game you have to practice so practice of what needs the most work until its better however much work that may take.  Being far fetched [is] hard to answer! Depends on the person!

GolfWRX Member gators78: Yup, Scott THE Piercy.Have to ask, is it HIYA as in karate chop, or HIYA as in hiya hows it going?

Scott Piercy: karate chop

GolfWRX Member QMany:  What was the toughest adjustment to “Tour life?” Who is the fastest player on Tour? Who is the slowest?

Scott Piercy: The toughest part of tour life is the travel. Fastest player [is] Matt Every.  Slowest [is] Kevin Na but he has way too many guys close to him.

GolfWRX Member Rob G 89: Scott, who rather you play with Tommy Gainey or Kiradech Apinbarnrat? Also is it boring when you’re  paired up with a non English speaker?

Scott Piercy: TG funny dude! Not really I still have my caddy to talk to.

GolfWRX Member kid clutch: Where/how do you generate your power?

Scott Piercy: Good question. Not really sure. Just always been pretty powerful.

GolfWRX Member JEFFERYLEE: Hey Scott, have you had to make any swing changes or compensations due to your baseball grip?  Do you feel it allows you to do certain things easier and or better than interlocking or overlapping?

Scott Piercy: Never had to compensate. It allows me to do what I need to do and the others don’t.

GolfWRX Member ram01002: Thanks for coming on to chat – – what is your advice on responding to poor/disappointing tournament results?

Scott Piercy: Try to find the positives.

GolfWRX Member pga43: Do your kids think it’s cool that Dad’s a Professional Golfer on the PGA Tour or do they just see you as Dad?  Any of your kids show a real interest in golf and say they might like to play as a Pro? Get well, man!  Miss you out here.

Scott Piercy:
They think it’s cool but they also just see me as dad. I tell my oldest kid I’m the coolest person he knows. Kind of a running joke in the family. None has really leaned towards golf yet. Miss ya too bud.

GolfWRX Member ram01002: What is one thing you wish you would have known 15 years ago as a player that you know now?

Scott Piercy: I wish I could have fixed my swing 15 yrs ago to what I know now.

GolfWRX Member bubbagump: Thanks for joining us Scott!  I’m curious, while most of us would do anything for a shot to be on the PGA tour…what have you found is the hardest thing about the grinds of being on tour?

Scott Piercy: Traveling and being away from the family and finding a consistent life routine.

GolfWRX Member DirecTVTechGuy:  Hi Scott, could you comment on the trend of drivers getting longer and longer from the OEM’s. How long is your driver? What is standard on tour? How long would you suggest a mid single digit handicap player play their driver length at? Thanks!

Scott Piercy: They do it for marketing to say more distance and I don’t think thats always the case because the longer the driver the harder to hit in the sweet spot. 44.75″  I would say between 44″-45″.

GolfWRX Member tssgj65:  Q1. What style of grind are you using on your 60? Q2.  Do the Aztecs have a chance against Arizona????

Scott Piercy: It’s a Vokey L-grind and then Aaron Dill from Titleist puts some extra love on it with some more grinding.
Aztecs will win (I hope).

GolfWRX Member sherwin1987: Hey Scott, thanks for answering our questions. Are there any clubs you’re currently testing to see if the can make it in the bag? Are there any clubs in your bag that might be on the chopping block?

Scott Piercy: Currently no because I have one good arm.  I had surgery a month ago.

GolfWRX Member mhendon: Two questions if you don’t mind. 1st do you feel practicing putting will help someone who’s problem is green reading not the mechanics of the stroke? 2nd Do you think as I do the networks exaggerate how far you guys hit your drives to create viewer interest?

Scott Piercy: You should look in to Aimpoint it will help you.  Sometimes they exaggerate and sometimes they really don’t   As a viewer its hard to know temp wind elevation and up and downhill. All that plays a roll.

GolfWRX Member QMany: In your opinion Who is the longest on Tour? Who is the best putter? Who has the best short game?

Scott Piercy: Garrigus. Kevin Na. Phil.

GolfWRX Member AP 712: How come you no longer use Michael Collins as a caddie?

Scott Piercy: Cuz he is too tall! lol.

GolfWRX Member Sean2: Hi Scott. I believe everyone struggles somewhat with this game, whether he is Touring professional or a high handicapper. How do you keep yourself from getting frustrated when things go a bit south?

Scott Piercy: By focusing on what you need to do to fix it.

GolfWRX Member BTP: Do you have any specific swing thoughts that you use during competition? Do those thoughts change throughout the course of the day or do you have go-to “thoughts”? Or nothing at all – just think target and strategy.

Scott Piercy: I usually have a few key things I can go to but sometimes I have to improvise!

GolfWRX Member Mitchell: After any extended break, what is your routine to prepare to get back into form for tournament play? Thanks in advance and best wishes going forward in your career.

Scott Piercy: Not really sure because I don’t generally take extended breaks. You just have to sharpen your game on the range and on the course.

GolfWRX Member midweston:  So, if you had one hour in a day to practice, how would you use it? What would you say is the biggest strength of your game and the thing you work the most on improving?

Scott Piercy: Always putt then find whatever needs the most work after that.

GolfWRX Member thatboygaule: How much time do you spend working on fitness and flexability ? I have been working with my coach and physio every 3 weeks but I find it hard to do it at home as I lack motivation and get lazy. Do you have any thoughts or want to share what you work on?

Scott Piercy: Fitness is def a part of the game. almost as much as being at the course praticing. And if you’re lazy and not motivated then I won’t worry about you taking my spot on tour.

GolfWRX Member gophers79: Really cool of you to take the time and answer some questions on here Mr. Piercy!  Thank you!
There are so many great golfers on the PGA Tour, the Web.com Tour, even top level amateurs.  What are one or two key things that you think separates a PGA Tour pro from a great golfer on the Web.com Tour or top level amateur that just can’t quite make the jump to the next level yet? What advice would you give a good amateur player on how to improve their game? Another one: what do you do to handle the nerves of a big tournament when you’re playing well / in contention?  Any go-to tips or thoughts that help you calm down and focus on the shot at hand?

Scott Piercy: It’s different for everyone. Work harder than the next guy! Focus on the process.

GolfWRX Member puttingforthe8: Thanks for joining Scott….you are one of my favorite players!!! Can you comment on your game, specifically the streakiness! (don’t mean that rude)  To me your game is like in basketball when a shooter gets hot and can’t miss.  What is the “switch” for you? or the Why?

Scott Piercy: I think its more of horses for courses and of late only having one good arm the past nine months.

GolfWRX Member kidclutch: Have any books influenced your game or thought process in anyway? If so, which ones?

Scott Piercy: Hogan 5 fundamentals.

GolfWRX Member CMUgol4: Do you have a favorite tournament (non-major)?

Scott Piercy: Phoenix

GolfWRX Member thatboygaule: How long do you stretch for before going out? And what do you stretch? the Christmas tree muscles ?

Scott Piercy: 5-10minutes. Pretty much everything.

GolfWRX Member easyyy: I am afraid of the wrong answer here but… have you ever been on GolfWRX before today and what did you think of it?

Scott Piercy: Yes I have and I liked. Only good things from me!

GolfWRX Member ram01002:  Are you still working with Stan Utley – – what has he changed in your putting stroke?

Scott Piercy: Not currrently but he’s a great guy.

Scott Piercy: Thanks everyone for your questions! lets do it again sometime!

Srixon ZXi combo or TaylorMade P7CB/770 combo? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been pitting a Srixon ZXi combo against a TaylorMade P7CB/770 combo. WRXer ‘edutch22’ is on the hunt for a new set of irons and kicks off the thread saying:

“Looking at picking up a new set of irons and think I’ve narrowed it down to Srixon ZXi combo or Taylormade P7CB/770 combo. I am currently a 5 cap and allbeit I feel irons are my weakness. My miss is a little to the toe side. I am decently steep at 4-5 down. Always thought I am high spin but recently on trackman my 7 was spinning at 5800 roughly.

My question or looking for thoughts on which one would benefit me more from a forgiveness standpoint? Or is there another iron is should be looking at entirely? I only get to play about once or twice a week, if I am not playing a 2-3 day event. Thanks in advance.”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts and suggestions in response.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • manima1: “You just can’t go wrong with Srixon ZXi7.”
  • MattM97: “You have to hit them to know, the V-Sole on the Srixon can be make or break for many.”
  • dmeeksDC: “P7CB is more forgiving for me than ZXi7 because my main miss is low middle and the P7CB still flies and spins great on that miss. These are both really nice irons but I like the P7CB more than the Zxi7 and the P770 (or P790) more than the Zxi5. The Srixons are larger so if that gives you confidence that is the way to go. I don’t feel like I get any benefit from the V-sole and the P7CBs live up to their high Maltby forgiveness rating so the TaylorMades have been great for me.”

Mizuno Pro M13 vs Callaway X Forged: My actual fitting numbers – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been reacting to a fitting session involving Mizuno’s Pro M13 and Callaway’s X Forged irons. WRXer ‘careergolfer’ recently went through a full fitting session and shared his numbers and commentary, saying:

“After playing Callaway Apex Pros for the pats 5 years, just went through a full iron fitting and thought the data was interesting enough to share. I’ve seen a lot of posts talking about fittings but not many with actual numbers, so here’s mine.

All 7-iron, same ball, same session. Final two were the ones I was choosing between:

Club Ball Speed Launch Spin Side Angle Carry Total
Current irons 121.1 mph 18.3° 6,691 rpm 0.7L 170 178
Callaway X Forged 125.8 mph 15.9° 6,144 rpm 2.2L 180 185
Mizuno M-13 125.8 mph 17.9° 6,638 rpm 2.2L 177 182

The consistency numbers are what actually made the decision:

Club Ball Speed SD Spin SD Total Yards SD
Current irons 3.3 294 5
Callaway X Forged 2.0 211 3
Mizuno M-13 1.1 150 2

Callaway won on distance by 3 yards but got there with a much lower ball flight (15.9° launch, 6,144 spin). The Mizuno matched my existing flight profile with nearly 3x tighter ball speed consistency.

Fitter also noted I’ve been setting up with a closed face at address to compensate for a heel-heavy dynamic lie. Ordered the M-13s 1° flat to bring impact back to neutral: the theory being if I can set up square, I can actually commit to the release. I’m not sure if this was the right call TBH but took the fitter’s guidance. I’ll see what happens.

Went with the Mizuno. Clubs aren’t in hand yet. Happy to share follow-up data once I’ve played them!”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts in response.

Here are a couple of posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • PowerCobra98: “M13 certainly performed well.  Enjoy the new irons once you get them!”
  • dmeeksDC: “Two completely different irons. The X Forged is a tour-type iron and would match up with the S3 in the Mizuno lineup. Not going to see a lot of M-13 on pro tours. It’s a crossover iron, three different types of construction in the same set. The M-13 would be more like the AI 150 as the M-13 7 iron is a half-hollow club versus X Forged, which is a straight up forged iron. M-13 middle irons have very thin faces, not holding up well for some buyers if you read through the M-13 thread. Hopefully Mizuno has corrected it. Given the differences in construction, that is surprising ball speed with the X Forged. To me the numbers are quite an endorsement of the X Forged considering it has no ‘tech.'”

Has there been a better driver since this Ping release? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing drivers. WRXer ‘Ty-Webb’ is still playing Ping’s G400 LS driver and reaches out to fellow members saying:

“Playing the G400 LS still and wondering if newer is any better? For someone who thinks golf equipment is 90% marketing, change my mind.”

And our members have been weighing in with their top picks in response.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • meliaant: “As someone who graduated from the OG SIM to the Qi10, I can you two things: 1) on-center hits are essentially identical. 2) off-center hits are wildly, absurdly better with newer drivers.”
  • Golfingfanatic: “I went from the G400 to the GT2 – probably a wash distance wise from the sweet spot, but much better at handling spin off-center.. would definitely try some new stuff if you can.”
  • bluedot: “Given the number of heads and shafts that are available, plus the fact that you’re talking about a 9 yr old club, plus the available fitting technology, the answer is almost certainly yes.  Add to that the fact that the Ping LS models are sort of ‘specialized’ drivers, as are the Ping SFT’s; heck, you might need MORE spin! How much better is really the question, and that depends on how well suited the G400 LS is to your swing, and how you will go about finding an alternative.”
