Monday Tour Mash: April 6, 2015

Published

Monday Tour Mash is a recap of the weekend’s top-5 golf stories, as well as a few others that didn’t quite make the cut.

Holmes At Home In Houston

Twenty-nine is a fine number, prime in more ways than one for J.B. Holmes. The 32-year-old erased a six-stroke deficit on Sunday at the Shell Houston Open with a front-nine 29, penning six birdies against three pars. The Kentucky native then survived a two-hole playoff with Texans Johnson Wagner and Jordan Spieth for his fourth career PGA Tour win, and second since May 2014.

Despite their home-state advantage, Spieth bowed out with bogey on the first playoff hole, then Wagner, who earned entry into the event through a sponsor’s exemption, was eliminated with bogey on playoff hole No. 2. Both Lone Star gazers were left frustrated for different reasons.

After winning three times on Tour from 2008 to 2012, Wagner has gone more than two seasons without a victory. Spieth has been the hottest player on Tour in 2015. In 10 events, he’s earned two wins and five other top-10 finishes, including three-straight top-2 finishes. But the fiery 21-year-old has to feel that he let two wins get away from him the last two weeks.

Check back next weekend, to see if Holmes parlays his win into major vibes at Augusta, or if Spieth can improve from his T2 finish at last year’s Masters.

Lincicome Captures Second Major Title

It was a day for playoffs on the professional tours. Brittany Lincicome and Stacy Lewis squared off in extra holes at the first LPGA major championship of the season, the inaugural ANA Inspiration (formerly the Kraft Nabisco Championship). Lewis was attempting to recover the No. 1 ranking and win a tournament in the process, while Lincicome’s focus was on winning her first major championship since 2009.

On the third playoff hole, Lewis’ second shot wound up in a sand-filled divot and she couldn’t get in par. When Lincicome tapped in for her five, the title was hers.

Drive, Chip and Putt… For Today!

There’s no guarantee that any of the winners of this weekend’s Drive, Chip and Putt National Championship at Augusta National will make a name for themselves in the collegiate or professional ranks. For one moment, though, they stood tall at the home of the Masters.

Eight division titles were won by girls and boys in four different age groups. In the Girls 12-13 division, Morgan Goldstein came in first in each of the skills to earn a four-point win. Not one of the Boys divisions was decided by more than one point and two of them resulted in tiebreakers. In contrast, three of the four Girls division winners did so by two or more points.

Lydia Ko and her Over-Par Streak

Three rounds and counting, after 29 straight ones in the red. Lydia Ko tied Annika Sorenstam’s LPGA Tour record of consecutive-subpar round on Thursday. After Sophie Gustafson tweeted at her that the “best thing about a streak ending is that another one can start,” LydKo started one she has no desire to continue. Rounds of 73-74-73 have given the young Kiwi a trio of over-par rounds as she exits the year’s first major championship.

Tiger Commits To The Masters

Tiger_Woods_Masters

It’s news, I guess. They say he had a worst-ball 66 at some Florida course. Big whoop. Show me something on tour, Mr. Woods. Actually, just finish a tournament for a change. Until then, I’m more inclined to believe the nay-sayers at this point. I’d love to be proven wrong. Golf still needs Tiger, but it needs a competitive, threatening one.

Missed the Cut

My 100th GolfWRX Story

Screen Shot 2015-04-06 at 9.12.16 AM

According to records, this is my 100th WRX story and if that’s not cause for celebration, what in the ham sandwich is? From the sidesaddle-putting debut to the greatest-hit, 54K-viewer piece on Adams drivers to this week’s Monday Tour Mash, the first century was a nice warm-up.

Time to up the game. Later, days!

Not All Golf Pranks Are Memorable (so don’t record them!)

Not certain who told these two lads that their shtick was funny. I’ll give them the Sparta routine, the one that leads off the video. Unfortunately, it goes awry from there. The leaf-blower bit is obnoxious and the exploding-ball routine is old as the hills.

    Chuck,

That’s a great idea. I’ll mention it to my editor. Thanks for your patronage.

If J. Wagner played the Masters this week
    He’d win

Despite the fact that J.B Holmes was this week’s Tour winner, could Golf WRX please post an article on Johnson Wagner: WITB?
