Monday Tour Mash: Day wins big, Geico’s golf commercial

FedExCup Playoffs

Jason Day isn’t ranked No. 1 in the Official World Golf Rankings, but he’s playing like he is. The reigning PGA Champion blitzed Plainfield Country Club for eight birdies on Sunday, pulling away from the field for a six-stroke victory. The soon-to-be-militarized Sang Moon Bae had four front-nine bogeys to fall from the chase. Henrik Stenson closed with 66 to finish alone in second.

Harman doubles down

Brian Harman dunked two tee balls on par-three holes Sunday. He slapped a 7-iron 183 yards into the hole on the 3rd, then muscled a 4-hybrid 218 paces into the cup for another uno on the 14th. Two holes-in-one, two rounds on Harman!

Hats Off To Geico

I saw this commercial in a tavern the other night and dove across the bar to hone in. Is there a Kracken lurking in Pete’s Pond on the 15th at Augusta (they changed the scoreboard to avoid the Greencoats’ wrath)? These writers get it all, from the chin-rub of the golfer and caddie to the whisper of the announcers. Love it.

Kris Tamulis broke through for her first LPGA Tour victory at the Yokohama Tire in Alabama. Tamulis carved up the Capitol Hill Senator course, part of the RTJ Golf Trail in the Yellowhammer state and held off the resurgent Yani Tseng and Austin Ernst, both one shot in arrears.

European

Pelle Edberg threatened, but Belgian Thomas Pieters rebounded from an early-Sunday double bogey with four birdies to claim the D+D Real Czech Masters. Former U.S. Amateur champion Matthew Fitzpatrick also threatened, but was undone by consecutive, back-nine bogeys. It was Pieters’ first Euro Tour victory, after a series of close calls. Dikke proficiat!

Champions

Jeff Maggert went out on Sunday in 32 strokes against a par of 37 at En-Joie, made one more birdie on the back and won the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open by two ahead of Paul Goydos. Overnight leader Rod Spittle had nothing on Sunday, shooting 2-over and dropping to a tie for 12th.

In other news…

You might feel empathetic, but this week’s John Daly story is another bizarre chapter in his life story. Here’s how it goes, according to Long John: He changed his son’s golf cart tire earlier in week and injured his hand in the process. He then played golf in a tournament and his lung collapsed, causing him to collapse on the course. What led to the collapsed lung?

“I had to change my swing some to get a good grip, and the doctor said the changed motion is likely what led to the collapsed lung,” Daly said.

Daly was back at it the next day — playing golf and smoking cigs.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
