Verizon Heritage Classic – The Quest For The Tartan Jacket

You have to feel a little sympathy for everyone involved with this week’s Verizon Heritage Classic. You just had to look around your workplace on Monday to see the visible after-effects of having one of the most riveting Masters Tournaments of all time. After so much drama and emotion of the week that was at Augusta National, it’s understandable that many people might be too spent to even consider that another golf tournament falls on the heels of the year’s first major.

For other though, the passing of The Masters signifies that the golf season is in full roar and they will again be glued to their television sets this week as the Verizon Heritage Classic plays out. Yes, the jacket you earn this week is not quite as sought after (Masters Green wins over Tartan Plaid for just about everyone) but this is still a storied event that any PGA Tour member would be proud to win.

Played on the historic Pete Dye-designed Harbour Town Golf Links a litany of great golf professionals won this crown before Brian Gay joined the circle of champions in 2009. Davis Love III, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Johnny Miller, Hale Irwin, Payne Stewart, and Tom Watson are among those who have won this event played on Hilton Head Island. Love III is the most prolific of those, having won the tournament a record 5 times over parts of three decades. (1987, 1991, 1992, 1998, and 2003). If he could win this year he could join Sam Snead and become the 2^nd player to win the same event in four different decades. This will be his 25^th time playing in this event.

Something incredible will have to happen this year if the tournament is to match the excitement of last’s year extraordinary performance by Brain Gay. In earning his second of three PGA Tour victories Gay looked like a virtuoso with the flat stick. Over the entire week he made just two bogeys, the fewest at a PGA Tour event since 1983. He set multiple tournament records with his score of 264, including the lowest score and the largest margin of victory, ten strokes. Gay will try to become the 4^th player to win the tournament in back to back years. Payne Stewart, Davis Love III, and Boo Weekley each managed the feat.

Even in the wake of The Masters there are several of the tour’s best players on hand this week. 2010 Tour winners Jim Furyk, Bill Haas, Camilo Villegas, and Cameron Beckman are in the field. Other notables include Paul Casey, Robert Allenby, Sergio Garcia, Stewart Cink, and Luke Donald – all among the top 30 ranked players in the world.

Length is not a huge factor at Harbour Town, one of the few Tour golf courses that measures less than 7,000 yards. Great ball striking and exceptional putting are the hallmarks of past winners. David Frost set the PGA Tour record of 92 total putts over 72 holes.

With that said be sure o keep an eye on great ball strikers like Allenby, Casey, and Donald this week as possible favourites. You could normally add Furyk and Garcia to that list but their confidence might be questionable after disappointing Masters performances.

And don’t worry, there will be a lot of post-Masters chatter this week as CBS carries the broadcast and you can expect they will have a few leftover tidbits to share. I’m good with that; it was a great championship after all, just as long as they make sure to give the Verizon Heritage Classic the respect it deserves.

The winner will pick up FedEx Cup points and a $1.026 million share of the $5.7 million purse.

What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Why do we use it?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
