Charley In Charge – Hoffman Wins Deutsche Bank Championship

A holed bunker shot; a near ace; a mid-iron off a cart path – there was a lot of flare in the final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship but in the end he did what nobody else was able to do, step up his game to earn a victory.  In doing so Hoffman took just 62 strokes on Monday on his way to a 22 under par total and a massive leap to 2nd in the FedEx Cup standings.  Eleven birdies helped to overcome the 4 stroke deficit he faced heading into the last day.  “I really didn’t know how many birdies I had made.  The ball just kept going in the hole,” said Hoffman who admitted he had struggled with his ball striking in his preparation for the test at TPC of Boston.

Luke Donald and Jason Day looked strong early on as co-leaders but stalled at critical points in their rounds, something you can’t do on the PGA Tour if you expect to win in this year where 28 scores of 62 or better have been posted.  With a few holes to play Day had a chance to catch up to Hoffman if he could run the tables but the 33 year-old Hoffman closed the door with yet another birdie with his final stroke.  At the same time Donald’s great ball striking seem to fail him and errant diving driving stalled his advances. 

The Deutsche Bank title is the just the 2nd for Hoffman who won last won in 2007 at the Bob Hope Classic and had a season best tie for fourth at the RBC Canadian Open as he headed into the FedEx Cup playoffs. 

Aggressive and confident play was the norm for Hoffman on Sunday who balanced just two bogeys against his flurry of birdies with both of them occurring on his opening nine where he still turned in 33.  He continued to fire away on his back nine that included below-par performances on holes 10, 11, 13, 15, 16, and his exclamatory birdie on the 18th. 

With American Ryder Cup Captain Corey Pavin set to make his picks on Tuesday Hoffman admitted that he hoped he could grab his attention but even his impressive run to a win might be futile.  As hot as he might be Pavin will more than likely look to players with a more steady record of late, combined with past International match experience – something Hoffman still lacks on his resume.

Like Hoffman, all is not lost for Day and Donald who tied for 2nd with Geoff Ogilvy.  Each of those players are now firmly planted in the top ten of the FedEx Cup and have a legitimate shot at the big prize with just the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship left to play out.

Also impressing many in Boston was the play of Tom Gillis and Aussie Adam Scott who shared 5th place with Brandt Snedeker. Scott seems to be back to form and is putting the ball exceptionally well after a recent shortening of his Scotty Cameron putter by an inch and a half.  Gillis, a 42 year-old journeyman (he has played pro events in 26 different countries) who played at Deutsche Bank with a sponsor-free cap, closed the tournament with two rounds of 65 to earn just his 3rd top ten finish of the season. 

A tie for 11th in Boston allowed Matt Kuchar to maintain his #1 FedEx Cup Ranking while Tiger Woods had the same placing in the tournament to not only advance him to the BMW Championship, but protect his hold on the position of #1 player in the world.

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.
