Jack Nicklaus sheds further light on Tiger Woods’ health, recovery

Published

Speaking with reporters during the final round of the Honda Classic, Jack Nicklaus — whose firm redesigned PGA National’s Champion Course — shared some details from his talk with Tiger Woods on Thursday night.

Nicklaus spoke with the recovering superstar at a dinner he hosted for potential Ryder Cup players and captains at his West Palm Beach home.

Per ESPN’s Bob Harig, Nicklaus indicated Woods, “Says he was feeling great and he was able to stand over a putt and chip now without having any leg pain or so forth.”

Not that further confirmation was necessary, but the Golden Bear supplemented Golf Channel’s Tim Rosaforte’s Thursday report that TW had been hitting drivers since last week, although Woods wasn’t swinging at full speed.

Nicklaus added, “He looked very good. He looked very healthy. And he really misses playing. So that’s good.”

“HE LOOKED GREAT AND HE WAS IN GREAT SPIRITS. THE GUYS ENJOYED HAVING HIM AT THE DINNER. WE HAD A LOT OF NICE BACK AND FORTH ABOUT HOW TO PLAY GOLF AND THIS AND THAT AND SO FORTH. IT WAS A VERY, VERY NICE EVENING. I HOPE THE GUYS ENJOYED IT.”

And while it’s unrelated to the Woods’ matter, this line from Nicklaus was too fantastic not to include here. Asked how the dinner might positively influence the U.S. side’s chances at Hazeltine, Nicklaus said, “I can’t imagine how them coming over to have dinner at an old man’s house is going to help any.”

Mercifully, Nicklaus wasn’t asked to speculate on when we might see Tiger Woods on the golf course again, which will certainly be a topic of much speculation going forward.

I’ve stood next to Tiger. He’s my height. I am terrible at guessing weight; I think guessing height is much easier, especially standing next to someone your same height. Tiger Woods is more than 6’0″, and less than 6’1″. We wear the same size sportcoat. I was hoping he might loan me one of his green ones.

And Nicklaus got his medical degree where exactly?

Two things. Why does Tiger look so short in this pic? Isn’t he like 6’1″? Secondly, what’s up with Keegan Bradley’s afro?

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
