Tour Mash: Day finds a way to win, Wesley Bryan graduates from trick shots

Day finds a way to win at Bay Hill
It’s a very good thing that Jason Day made 23 birdies and 1 eagle over his four days at Bay Hill. Turns out, he needed each one.
After looking invincible at 13-under par through two days, Day suddenly began making bogeys on the weekend. An expected challenge from Henrik Stenson fell off in Round 4, but Kevin Chappell and Troy Merritt picked up the scent and gave chase all day. Merritt made five consecutive birdies while paired with Day, but found the water on his approach to the last to fall into a tie with Stenson for third.
Chappell drove it into the rough on No. 18 and had to pitch out. Unable to save par from the fairway, he could only watch as Day hit the shot of the tournament, a 32-yard bunker shot to 4 feet at the 18th green, which he made to beat Chappell by a shot.
“I could not think of anything else other than trying to get that thing up and down, “Day said. “When it came out I knew that it was a good shot. I hit it great. I mean there — it was exactly what I wanted to do. I didn’t want to spin it too much, I didn’t want it to check. I wanted to make sure it landed on the green and ran down to the hole.”

Sei Young Kim ignites at LPGA Founders Cup
Nearly 15 years to the date that Annika Sorenstam completed the lowest tournament score (27 under) in relation to par at the Standard Register Ping, Sei Young Kim equaled the long-standing record in Phoenix. Sorenstam’s win was highlighted by the only 59 in LPGA tour history, and though Kim did not go quite that low, she opened with 63 and closed with 62 to secure a five-stroke win over runner-up Lydia Ko. The winner’s reaction to her historic performance was ebullient.
“Yeah, It’s a dream come true,” she said. “Today I scored 10-under. It’s my best score ever, ever. I didn’t know that after last putt. But after I check the score card, I asked to Paul, my caddy, I said, did I shoot 10-under. He said, yeah. Oh, my God. It’s amazing, yeah. Dream come true. So feel great.”
Wesley Bryan graduates from trick shots with Web.com win
Wesley Bryan and his brother, George, are known far and wide across the YouTubeverse for their entertaining, inimitable trick shots. Over the past four days, George carried the clubs and Wesley hit the shots at the Web.com Tour’s Chitimacha Louisiana Open. The Bryans were 3-under on Sunday’s back nine, enough to post a one-stroke win over third round co-leader Julian Etulain of Argentina.
With the victory, Wesley Bryan moved into 3rd place on the Web.com Standings. The top-25 finishers earn a PGA Tour card.

Austin wins Tucson Conquistadores Classic
When Woody Austin drove left in the water on his final hole Sunday, he would be forgiven for experiencing deja-vu. The mercurial Austin had previous experience in Tour ponds, having earned the nickname Aquaman after his splashdown in the 2007 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal Golf Club. This time, Austin took his medicine and a penalty drop, made bogey and escaped with a one-stroke margin of victory.
In his two previous Champions Tour starts in 2016, Austin had posted final rounds of 76 and 77. There was no reason to believe that a 65 was in the forecast for Sunday in Tucson. And yet, that’s precisely what the Tampa native delivered, leading to his slim edge over runner-up Jim Carter. Austin began the day with three consecutive birdies, made three more plus an eagle, and survived that final-hole dousing for his first Champions Tour victory.
Chawrasia dispatches Lahiri for Hero Indian Open title
Shiv Chawrasia certainly had unsettling memories of previous playings of the Indian Open. In 2015, “Chow” lost the coveted title to countryman Anirban Lahiri on the first playoff hole. On three other occasions, the Delhi native had finished in the second spot, watching someone else hoist the winner’s trophy.
For a time on Sunday it appeared that history would repeat itself, again at Chawrasia’s expense. Lahiri posted birdies on Sunday’s first three holes to approach the lead, but the veteran Chawrasia played patient, unspectacular golf throughout the round. With bragging rights on the line, S.S.P. Chawrasia closed with birdies on two of the round’s final six holes, while Lahiri’s charge fizzled.

In the end, Chawrasia emerged with a two-stroke win over Lahiri and Wang Jeunghun of South Korea. The victory was the third on the European Tour for Chawrasia.
