Bryson DeChambeau turns professional, signs with Cobra-Puma, Bridgestone

When Bryson DeChambeau arrived to the Arnold Palmer Invitation in March with a new driver, fairway wood and driving iron in the bag — all from the same equipment manufacturer — it was clear the golfer had made up his mind about what company he would endorse when he turned professional.
The reigning NCAA Men’s Individual and U.S. Amateur champion picked up another distinction last week at the Masters as the low amateur (T21), the Silver Medal, but it will be his last amateur distinction. He’s entered this week’s RBC Heritage as a professional, which brought about today’s news that he has signed a multi-year partnership with Cobra-Puma Golf. According to the company, DeChambeau will use the company’s Cobra Golf clubs, and wear its Puma footwear and apparel on the course.
“When deciding to turn professional, my goal was to partner with a company that would allow me to accomplish great things in the next phase of my career,” DeChambeau said in a Cobra-Puma release.
“The Cobra and Puma brands complement my style, attitude and desire to be innovative, while allowing me to continue to think outside the box and help grow the game … I have been working with their team for a few months now, testing equipment and getting fit for apparel and footwear and without question, I’ve been impressed at every turn. My equipment change has been seamless…”

We spotted DeChambeau this week at Hilton head with seven Cobra clubs in the bag, including a King F6+ driver, a King F6 fairway wood, a King Utility driving iron and King wedges. At least for now, he’s retained his custom, single-length Edel irons, but he did experiment with a set of single-length Cobra irons at the Georgia Cup, which took place prior to The Masters.
DeChambeau has also signed a ball and glove deal with Bridgestone Golf, and will play the company’s B330S golf ball.

I like his confidence, style and, above all, his intellect. He has all the requisites for stardom.

Let’s see if he can be as well-known for his play as he is for the tools of his trade. Time will tell. I make no predictions. If he plays well professionally, this could be good for years of interesting discussion.

Personally, I would of thought staying with Edel to be more akin with “outside the box”, but I suppose there is no money in that venture. I can’t wait to see more two tone Puma pants and duck hooks off the tee from this young fella.

You can bet on the Puma Pants…the duck hooks will be few and far between I would think with his swing method….

It seems with the release of all this promotional information that he had agreements in place before the Masters. Was he still an amateur?

USGA Rules on amateur golfers section 2-2:
“An amateur golfer may enter into a contract and/or agreement with a third party (including but not limited to a professional agent or a sponsor), provided:
(i) the golfer is at least 18 years of age,
(ii) the contract or agreement is solely in relation to the golfer’s future as a professional golfer and does not stipulate playing in certain amateur or professional events as an amateur golfer, and
(iii) except as otherwise provided in the Rules, the amateur golfer does not obtain payment, compensation or any financial gain, directly or indirectly, while still an amateur golfer.”
So yes, he was still an amateur.

I never understood how receiving free clothes, balls, clubs, gloves, bags, etc… is not receiving compensation? I’d love to not be compensated like that.
