5 Things We Learned: Day 3 of the PGA Championship

Published

on

Let’s be honest, we didn’t learn much beyond the fact that northeastern sites for major championships are jinxed. Baltusrol, Bethpage Black, Oakmont, Bethpage again, now Baltusrol for a second time. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a U.S. Open in June or a PGA in July or August, the rains will come! There was some news on our abbreviated Day 3 of the 2016 PGA Championship, and here it is.

Beef needs a binder

His beard-no-moustache look is fetch, we’ll admit, but Andrew “Beef” Johnston is going to have to play some golf if he wants to be remembered as something more than a nice guy with a politician’s thumbs-up, a great smile, and an engaging personality. After birdies on two of the first three holes, old Beef ran off two bogeys and a double in the next five holes. He’s 1-over par for the tournament with seven to play in his third round. Time to go low, lad.

No low club pro again

In the other three majors, the secondary competition is for amateurs to make the cut. In this event, we cheer for one of the 20 PGA club professionals to make it a full four rounds. Ryan Helminen of Wisconsin came closest, tying Rory McIlroy for “we just missed the weekend” place at 3-over par. In 2015, Brian Gaffney was the sole PGA Professional to survive the ax, while in 2014, none passed the two-round test. Perhaps Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina, will prove more accommodating in 2017.

Have you seen the forecast? They’re not going to get any golf in tomorrow, if it holds. Percentages like “90 percent thunderstorms” and “60 percent scattered thunderstorms” are in the cards until 6 p.m. Sunday. Oh, it’s supposed to rain like hell on Monday, too. We are in for a long, wet haul, friends.

If and when they play, they will make birdies

With a soggy course, tees will be moved up and lift/clean/place will be put into effect. The greens are “pristine,” according to Phil Mickelson, who believes that a score of 61 is out there. Fingers and toes crossed.

Kevin Kisner and Padraig Harrington like their positions

These two guys are within 5 and 4 strokes of the lead, respectively, and they’re done with 54 holes. Granted, they have no idea when they will tee off tomorrow, and we could have a retro hot mess of leaders not playing with leaders, like they used to do in the olden days. Kisner, the Robert Streb of Day 3, had seven birdies on the day. His run of minus-figures from 15 to 17 brought him to 5-under on the day and overall. Harrington also had 65 (with no bogeys) to get to 4-under.
