The reason why John Daly threw 50 grand out a car window
Some would kick off a story like this by saying “John Daly, never change.” But we know JD has never been in any danger of changing his stripes, which is part of what makes him so iconic.
The star of the widely praised 30 for 30, “Hit it Hard,” Daly sat down with ESPN’s Dan Le Batard earlier this week. Predictably, he had a few stories to tell.
Kudos to Golfweek’s Kevin Casey for spotting this gem, which is a necessary addition to the pantheon of great John Daly stories.
Daly, who purports to have gambled away more than $50 million in his life, told a particularly entertaining tale of how he lost roughly $55,000 of that total…and it wasn’t to a casino or bookie.
Rather, Daly separated himself from the funds by choice in order to make a point to his wife (now ex-wife) Sherri.
“I won like $55,000 in the casino and I said (to Sherri), if you’re going to yell and scream at me about this, I threw it over the bridge going over to Memphis from Arkansas. I threw all the money out the (car) window and said, ‘You know what, if you want that money, you can go find it. But let me tell you something, you don’t have a job. You’re not working. I’m supporting you, I’m paying all the bills.’
“My buddy (then) took her to a McDonald’s drive-thru and got her two cheeseburgers and some french fries and a soda, and (it was like), ‘OK, this is how you can live from now on if that’s the way you want it.’”
Wow. According to Casey, Sherri addressed the jettisoned funds in her 2011 book, Teed Off: My Life as a Player’s Wife on the PGA Tour. In her retelling of the incident, she did in fact go back and pick up the majority of the cash.
Daly, a veteran of four ex-wives, told Le Batard that his problems with the fairer sex in the past weren’t a product of bad decisions, but rather, as he said, “I’m like Jesus. My problem is I love ’em all.”

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.
Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.
