FTF: Jason Day to play even slower? What’s your favorite major?

The GolfWRX forums exist so golfers have access to the latest equipment releases, hottest discussions, real equipment reviews, best instruction, new technologies and everything golf you can imagine. So if you love golf, the GolfWRX forums are your sanctuary.
In the From the Forums weekly feature, we bring you the hottest, most buzz-worthy topics from our forums for your convenience. I’ll be your trusty tour guide to navigate the latest buzz. Here’s a peek behind the curtain into golf’s sanctuary.
“Slow Play Day” Discussion
I get it. If you’re a professional athlete, you want to do everything within the rules to give yourself the best chance to win. And as a golfer, especially in contention, that includes maximizing the time investment in both readying to hit and hitting critical shots. Still, Jason Day, already regarded as a slow player, was always going to draw flack when he came out and said, essentially, “I’m going to play slower” in 2017.
Reading Day’s full comments ahead of the Tournament of Champions is important, and seeing what WRXers had to say, entertaining. See the thread.
Your favorite major?
The Masters? The Open? The U.S. Open? (No disrespect to the PGA Championship) One of the age-old debates among golf fans, here, unfolding in both poll and discussion fashion. To see which major is tops for the WRX faithful, you have to check out this thread. And, of course, to debate why your favorite major is the best, you need to add a reply. Check out the thread.
Your first golf purchase of 2017?
We’re already a handful of days into the new year, so it’s time to shake off those holiday hangovers and buy something golf-related. GolfWRX Member Craz-e started the thread saying he’s looking for a new driver, or possibly a shiny new set of blades.
To see what WRXers are planning to fill their carts with first, check out the thread.
What clubs are you getting rid of in ‘17?
A companion piece, of sorts, to the thread above. Pmcuk asks: “Which clubs didn’t make the grade last year? Which will be missed a little, and which were the clunkers you were glad to see the back of?”
A great discussion (and look at buying habits). See the thread.
GBB Epic photos galore!
As we often point out in FTF, for many of the excellent items filed on the Front Page there’s at least one thread in the forums to enhance your reading. In this case, Zak’s nuanced review of the Callaway GBB Epic and Epic Sub Zero obviously couldn’t include the dozens of photos of the drivers (and fairway woods).
So if you read the review, this thread is a necessary addendum. Check it out.

I’m a 31 year-old male and I turned my apartment living room into a driving range stall – GolfWRXers react

In our forums, our members have been reacting to a post from ‘GolferTodd’ who has turned their apartment living room into a driving range stall. ‘GolferTodd’ produced the following photo in our forums with the caption:
“To the exclusion of furniture. Bachelor life.”
And our members have been reacting to the post in our forums.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- MtlJeff: “This is amazing……When i was 28 i lived in an apartment that had my winter tires in the kitchen, i only had one plate and 1 set of knives and forks, and i cooked pasta in a witches cauldron from 1835. And i still convinced a woman to marry me. So i am all for this. In fact this is way better than what i had to offer.”
- TiScape: “Love it Todd. Go Dodgers!!”
- imkirby34: “Based on the view out the window, it looks like you’re on the first floor, which is probably a good thing because I’d hate to live below you, even if you have an extremely shallow AoA. Haha.”

Best classic irons – GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been discussing classic irons. WRXer ‘DonaldDunes’ has caught the vintage club bug, and wants to know other members’ favorite iron models that “have stood the test of time or were the top performers for their day.”
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Maine Golfer: “I love a lot of clubs but ’69 Wilson Staff’s are an all time favorite. Easy to hit in relative terms and they look amazing.”
- Wilsonian: “No surprise from me, but the Wilson K-28 irons, specifically blades with the glide thru sole. I grew up playing Ram clubs, but got away from them as I got older. My return to vintage was with the Wilsons, and my first set of hickories were the Wilson Plus Success irons. You’ll try a lot of sets, but I think it’s a matter of what feels best in your hands, specifically your 7 iron which is the best indicator imo.”
- Hawkeye777: “Hogan Redlines. Macgregor Nicklaus Muirfield 20th. Wilson Staff Tour Blade. Those are mine, don’t play any of them these days (no real reason to) and didn’t really “collect” them. The Wilsons I played with for years.”

When buying used irons how much wear is too much? – GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been discussing how much wear is too much wear when purchasing used irons. WRXer ‘con_mon2’ is interested in a used set of iron and kicks off the thread, asking:
“Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this! How much wear are you comfortable with?
I found a set of irons on eBay that I am very interested in buying, but they have a bit more wear than I’m comfortable with. I have attached a few pictures showing especially the wear on the sweet spot on the PW and 9 iron. Maybe you can convince me that I’m being too picky and I should just buy them? Or maybe I should be concerned about the wear? I’m not really sure. They are Ping i230s which came out in 2022 so they aren’t that old. And the seller had this to say about the condition: ‘Good: Normal wear for their age. Excellent playing condition but they have cosmetic wear on faces and soles. Sweetspot wear is visible.’
Beyond the cosmetic, I’d really like to know this: At what point do you start to worry about the grooves being so worn that they have a substantial effect on the shots you’re hitting?”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts in response.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- rsballer10: “The term you are looking for is “browning” and these irons have some of that going on. They are completely playable, but I’d say they’ve reached their half-life.”
- Nessism: “Those heads are stainless steel. The “browning” that some people reference, is really the yellow shade of the nickel layer under the chrome. When forged carbon steel heads wear through the chrome, the “brown” is RUST. These heads will never rust. People applaud the old Ping irons as being “indestructible”. Those heads had no chrome. These heads, even if the chrome is beginning to wear through, on one head, are miles more durable than the older unplated “indestructible” Ping’s. And even further ahead of any forged club.”
- phizzy30: “Hard pass for me. I would rather get a new set of DTC irons and would be glad to spend the extra couple to few hundred.”

I like Day but enough is enough. Put him on the clock and hit him with a penalty if he doesn’t speed up. Or is that a punishment reserved only for the small-time players and 16 year-olds playing in the Masters who are making the course look easy?

I play about 13 tournaments per season, most are senior tournaments but 6 were based on handicap. There are always marshalls on the course when we play making sure our pace is within the 4:15 time limit. Even when the weather is bad ( read; rainy) we still have to play within our limit. I’ve been in groups where there’s been a guy who plays slow and the marshalls are usually pretty fair noting that our group ( usually threesomes) are behind. And often it’s the guy shooting par or better or shooting a career round.
So we’re not pros, if you do well like win or low net, the gifts are worth around $200.00. Regardless, I’m a 5 handicap and I’ve been in the gift certificate prize pool 4 times this season and often I can’t wait to get off the course. The faster I play , the better I score. Naturally if you’re playing with someone who sprays the ball a lot, it slows you down.
And speaking of Jason Day; how more deliberate can he play? Personally I hate slow play especially guys that are stuck over the ball. Slow plays hurts the game.

Wish there was something more the PGA could do about this guy’s dreadful preshot routine.
Best way to watch this year will be to Tivo it and skip through all the ‘flickering eyes’ bit.
While you’re at it, skip through the commercials too. What do you suppose the PGA would do if their sponsors found out half the audience was skipping through their ad time?

I´m curious what those, who think, that shorter courses would speed up the game think, in regard of slow play from Jason Day and in general…
…I think, that someone, who takes an excessive amount of time for his shot preperation, is showing a similar disrespectful, unsporting behaviour, like someone, who is making noise, placing his shadow on the putting line, or start moving during your downswing / stroke.
Once, I played in a tournament, on a very hot summer day, getting sweat, thirsty and my skin burned…
…and I felt great pain to watch the two others in my flight, preparing each and every shot more than once, before they hit their shank…
…we needed around 6 hours to complete the round…
…and the gap between us and the flight in front of us reached whopping 45 minutes!
They played fair and were very nice characters, and after the round, the officials and I gave a indirect, general hint in regard of slow play…
…the funny thing was, that both agreed, and shouted against slow play, despite they were the reason, why slow play was mentioned…
…imagine, they would have to use shorter golf balls and would therefore need to prepare for even more strokes!!!
If anything is to improve within the game golf, it is the awareness of slow play…
…and the according education, to avoid slow play…
…thus, it would be helpful to show in TV exemplary behaviour.
