Phil Mickelson withdraws from the 2017 U.S. Open

Published

Phil Mickelson has officially withdrawn from the 2017 U.S. Open and will be replaced by Roberto Diaz (Mexico), the first alternate from the Summit, N.J., Sectional Qualifying Site.

Mickelson originally told reporters that he would not play the U.S. Open at The Memorial two weeks ago in order to attend his daughter’s high school graduation ceremony in San Diego, California. He did not withdraw at that time, however, in case a weather delay allowed for him to make his afternoon tee time. He even sent his caddie to Erin Hills this week to scout the Wisconsin course, as rain was in the forecast for Round 1 earlier in the week.

With no threat of rain in today’s forecast at Erin Hills, however, Mickelson decision to withdraw more than seven hours before his tee time gives the 30-year-old Diaz ample time to prepare for his first U.S. Open. Thumbs up, Lefty.

Mickelson, 46, had competed in 23-consecutive U.S. Opens. He’s a six-time runner-up in the event (1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2013), and a five-time major champion who has won each of golf’s major championships (the Masters, Open Championship and PGA Championship) with the exception of the U.S. Open.

Won many majors, have you? All credit to armchair tough men.

If that’s a joke, I don’t get it. I can’t recall Phil backing down from many challenges in his career. What I do recall is that, unlike his buddy Eldrick, he puts his family first. (Eldrick is whoring > golf > family)… Or are you suggesting Phil used his daughter as an excuse? Again, not something I think Phil would do.
