Blimp catches fire, crashes near U.S. Open at Erin Hills

Published

A blimp deflated, caught fire and crashed near the U.S. Open at Erin Hills. It was not affiliated with the championship.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel has published a detailed report of the incident, so we’ll just summarize the details.

The blimp crashed at 11:20 a.m. CST, according to the report, between Highways 83 and 167. Rescue crews and fire departments responded to the scene shortly after the crash.

The blimp was advertising PenFed Credit Union. It was being promoted by AirSign, a national aerial advertising firm. The pilot remained with the blimp as it slowly descended to the ground.

A spokesman for AirSign spoke to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, and said that the pilot is okay, but suffered some burns.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
