Ian Poulter plays final round in 2 hours and 22 minutes, fires his best round of the week

The debate regarding pace of play in the game of golf is rarely far from the surface, and on Sunday at the DP World Tour Championship, Ian Poulter showcased the benefits of speeding around the golf course.

It took Poulter just two hours and 22 minutes to complete his final round at Jumeirah Golf Estates (Earth Course), and what’s more, is that while flying around the golf course, the Englishman recorded his best score of the week, firing a round of 69.

After the round, Poulter, who is well known for his dislike of slow play in the game stated

“I’m a quick player. I don’t like slow play, so today was quite refreshing. It didn’t matter where I finished… I just wanted to get back for breakfast.”

Poulter isn’t the first player to play a final round in rapid time, with Wesley Bryan and Kevin Na both beating the Englishman’s time over the past couple of years. At the 2016 Tour Championship, Na darted around the course in just under two hours, while at the 2017 BMW Championship, Wesley Bryan took less than 90 minutes to complete his final round,

Interestingly, in all three of these cases of speedy play, the players shot their best round of the week while playing at their quickest.

So GolfWRXers, does playing fast bring out the best in a golfer, or is this another case of a player performing well when the pressure is off?

It would have been embarrassing if he hadn’t, after all he has a caddy and doesn’t have to carry his own clubs nor pull the pin, or clean his ball.

When my buddy and I get out first or with no one in front, we walk 18 in 3 hours.

Are you sure on this? The times shown add up to 94 mins on holes 12-18 so unless he played the other 11 in an amazing 50 mins it seems unlikely?

I almost always play better playing more quickly and have shot some of my best rounds playing alone in under two hours. The golf swing is an explosive athletic motion and being able to walk briskly or even jog between shots keeps me warmed up and ready to make a good swing. And cuts down on unproductive rumination.

There is absolutely no advantage to slow play. When has golf ever worked when you over think, just get up and hit it for christ sake.

I always score better when I can play at my own pace which is about about 2 hours on average. I think it has a lot to do with being able to settle into your own rhythm. Also, if you’re playing slow then there’s a decent chance you’re in a constant grind mode which takes its toll on a golfer’s mental ability. So yeah, not surprising to me that they all scored better when playing at a pace they set for themselves and were comfortable with.

  100% agree. It’s not about speed, it’s about YOUR speed. for me, that’s 3hrs. I don’t fuss over lost balls, I don’t take a stupid amount of practice swings, but I do take the time to read my putts and enjoy my day.
  
  However, the best golfers find a way to play at the speed of the field. Whether you’re following Rory Sabbatini because he went to the next hole, or Jason Day taking an eternity, you have to adjust to what is going on. While I think pace of play at all courses should be 3h30m, there are lots who don’t care about spending 4hrs on the course.

What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Why do we use it?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
