Padraig Harrington to captain Europe at the 2020 Ryder Cup

Padraig Harrington will captain Europe’s Ryder Cup side for the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.

Harrington, who is a three-time major champion, has been a vice-captain at the event for the last three contests and speaking at a press conference at the European Tour’s Wentworth headquarters, the Irishman spoke about the honor he feels in taking the role and also the tasks he will face as captain

“I’m thrilled. It’s not something I went into lightly. You could look at this as being a natural progression, a move on from player to vice-captain to captain but it’s not something that I take on without a certain amount of trepidation.

I really want to be a help. I want to hopefully leave the European Tour and Ryder Cup in a better place after two years, but I know we are going to a new venue, it’s an away match, we’re going to have on average three more rookies coming into the team.

I have to be part of that team and ensure that I find an edge to make the team perform to the best of their abilities and hopefully get a win.”

Harrington had been heavily tipped to land the role, and despite appearing on four winning sides as a player, the 47-year-old stressed how due to the immense pressure under the captain’s at the biennial event, he feels as if he is “putting his legacy on the line” in accepting the role.

Harrington faces the arduous task of attempting to defend the Ryder Cup on foreign soil, and after being confirmed as captain today spoke about how the decision to lead the European side in Wisconsin in 2020 wasn’t one he made lightly.

“It’s something I did think long and hard about. It’s possibly easier to be Ryder Cup captain at home, but I realise it was good timing in my career and probably the best chance for the team in an international setting, going to the US having me as captain at this time.

Then it really came down to whether I wanted to be in the hat and put what is a successful career on the line. It’s a different element to your career, and we know a successful captain is great and a losing captain – it’s his fault. I’m putting something on the line going out there.”

Attention now turns to who Harrington will choose as his five vice-captains for the event.

Phil Mickelson made history at the 2021 PGA Championship on Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course. At 50, he became the oldest player to win a major, breaking Julius Boros’s record. Starting the final round with a slim lead, Lefty faced tough competition from Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen. He pulled ahead with key birdies and a standout 366-yard drive on the 16th hole. Finishing 6 under par and two shots ahead, Mickelson claimed his sixth major and second PGA Championship. Many saw his win as an inspiring comeback, showing that experience and determination can still lead to victory in professional golf — and, sometimes, age is just a number.

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
