Brooks Koepka snaps back at weight-loss critics after brilliant opening 66 at the Masters

Brooks Koepka began his 2019 Masters with a stunning 66 on Thursday at Augusta National, and after completing his round, Koepka took aim at those who have been critical of the three-time major champion’s recent weight loss.

Just under a month ago, Koepka described his golf game as being “out of sorts” after dropping 22 pounds which sparked criticism after rumors emerged that the drop in weight had been for an upcoming photo shoot. One of the fiercest critics of Koepka’s 22-pound weight loss has been Golf Channel’s Brandel Chamblee, who while speaking on the channel’s “Live from The Masters” show earlier this week, described Koepka’s weight loss as “The most reckless self-sabotage that I have ever seen.”

On Thursday following his excellent opening round of six-under par, Koepka hit back at those critics. With more than a hint of sarcasm according to Golf Channel’s Ryan Lavner, Koepka stated “I’m too big to play golf, and then when I lose weight, I’m too small. I’m gonna do what makes me happy” before glancing at the leaderboard and adding “Seems to be working.”

The reigning PGA Championship and US Open champion continues his quest for a first green jacket on Friday, teeing off with Paul Casey and Jordan Spieth at 11.04am ET.

Phil Mickelson made history at the 2021 PGA Championship on Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course. At 50, he became the oldest player to win a major, breaking Julius Boros’s record. Starting the final round with a slim lead, Lefty faced tough competition from Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen. He pulled ahead with key birdies and a standout 366-yard drive on the 16th hole. Finishing 6 under par and two shots ahead, Mickelson claimed his sixth major and second PGA Championship. Many saw his win as an inspiring comeback, showing that experience and determination can still lead to victory in professional golf — and, sometimes, age is just a number.

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
