‘He was shaking his head all day’ – John Daly recalls the time he beat Tiger Woods while drunk

While sitting down for an interview with Tucker Carlson, John Daly told a story about the time he beat Tiger Woods while he was “still drunk” from the night before.

Carlson was speaking about Woods, and said to Daly, “You beat him hungover once?”

Daly replied, “I was still drunk, actually, but yeah, that was a funny story”.

“That was at Sherwood, early 2000’s (he later specified that it was 1994), there was only about 12 or 14 pros, but we didn’t play too good.”

“We had the roundtable at Sherwood and I had my bottle of Jack Daniels then. I just meet these guys, right?”

“Tiger came in and I said ‘T, come have a drink with us man’. And he said ‘no, I’m going to go hit some balls’. A few hours later, I said again, ‘come have a drink with us.’ Tiger said, ‘no, I’m going to go work out’.”

“This is going on for about 5 or 6 hours and we’re still there just pounding, getting drunk, having a good time. I got a sponsorship out of it which I was happy about.”

“TW comes out in a suit and I go, ‘where are you going?’ He says ‘I got a guitar on stage for you. You have to go to the dinner’.”

“I didn’t know anything about a dinner. I got no shoes on, I got my shirt tucked out, I got shit spilled all over me. Just drunk.”

“The bar room wasn’t very far, so I stumbled over there. There’s a chair and a guitar.”

“I did Knockin’ on Heaven’s Tour’ and got a standing ovation and said I’ll see you tomorrow”.

“So [the next morning] we tee off, my caddie was drunk with us. There’s only two times I’ve ever drank on a golf course. One, I had a few Coors Lights, we had a long wait to play the back nine at Riviera. I downed four or five Coors Lights; I was playing like shit. There’s like four groups waiting to tee off on the front, I downed those, shot -4 or -5 on that side and make the cut, think I ended up finishing 3rd”.

“But the funny thing about Tiger is, when I got on the tee, I had my caddie bring me a crown or a jack and coke, if you’ve never played Sherwood, the first hole, he’s walking and walking through all the cactuses on this hill trying not to spill my drink.”

“I grab my 3-iron and go on the tee. To make a long story short, I shoot like 65 he shoots like 71, he was shaking his head all day.”

Carlson asked him, “Wasn’t the lesson that you should drink more on the golf course?”

“I’m not saying you should, but I’ve only done it twice and it was only that one drink. I think the statute of limitations is up for fining me right now.”

CBS’s Sunday Masters coverage slammed by golf fans

While Sunday was a dramatic day at the Masters, many golf fans were left feeling frustrated by the CBS final round coverage.

There were plenty of moments that golf fans took to social media to air their frustrations on Sunday over, including a lack of shots being shown throughout the day, being behind the live action, confusion over the approach shots of the final group on 18, and providing an angle for the winning putt where the cup couldn’t be seen.

Here’s a look at some of the criticisms that were directed at the CBS coverage throughout the day on X:

The surprise club Tommy Fleetwood says is key to his Masters chances

Tommy Fleetwood goes in search for the first major victory of his career again this week, with the Englishman proving to be a popular pick at Augusta National.

Fleetwood’s best showing at Augusta came back in 2024 where he finished T3, and while speaking at his pre-tournament press conference, the 35-year-old emphasized the importance of his 9-wood in his pursuit of the green jacket.

Speaking on Tuesday to media, Fleetwood said:

“It’s a great 9-wood golf course. I think it’s always been — I can’t remember when I first put like a 9-wood in or a high lofted club, but it’s a perfect like 9-wood golf course. I’ve had that in the bag for a few years.”

The Englishman continued, revealing that his strategy for the week won’t just be to hit driver off the tee as much as possible:

“Yeah, it’s funny really because I know Augusta is probably associated with being fairly forgiving off the tee in a way, so you think you can whale around driver a little bit. But I don’t necessarily think that’s always the play for me. I think there’s holes that set up really well where I can draw it with the mini driver if I’m feeling less comfortable with the driver and things like that.”

That strategy he believes will make his TaylorMade Qi10 9-wood extra critical this week in Georgia:

“The biggest thing is the 9-wood for me. If I can put myself in position on the par-5s or the 4th long par-3, like it — for me, I can’t really hit that high 4-iron, so 9-wood helps me a lot.”
