Not Another Golf Show: Tiger’s 2025? LPGA’s slow play winner? + Super Bowl revelry

Ben is coming back to earth following the Birds’ Super Bowl victory while Gianni mourns his losing under bet. A discussion of Tiger Woods’ Genesis Invitational withdrawal leads into a larger talk about TW’s 2025 (and beyond) prospects, expectations, and more. Analyzing week one after the LPGA’s slow play announcement and the Collin Morikawa-Lucas Glover back-and-forth as well.
Listen to the episode below!
Gianni: So this was first reported by Golfweek’s Beth Ann Nichols. So rounds at last week’s Founders Cup, the median time for threesomes in round one and two were four and a half hours on Thursday and four hours, 23 minutes on Friday. And for the final round of twosomes, they were played in a median of three hours and 48 minutes. And this is a far cry from last November when the Annika, I mean, rounds were taking five and a half hours, so this is big improvement already.
Ben: Yeah, pretty wild. Again, for as bold as the action was and the indication that action would be taken at all, to see an immediate impact of that magnitude. And again, I have not dug into nor heard, I guess I’d have to hear it before I dug into it, right? But any player grumbling about being forced, I’m sure in the perception of some, to play faster. So trying to be mindful of that, but would seem a massive success even at this point.
Gianni: Yeah, it’s gonna be interesting to see the next few weeks whether this is just a knee-jerk reaction to that or people are really gonna be mindful about their timekeeping now. But I think the next couple of weeks will give us an indication of whether this is really gonna work or not. But either way, it’s gonna come down to, even if it doesn’t, it’s gonna come down to how the LPGA really decide to be, whether they decide to be lenient or really no tolerance with their time, with the times they’ve put out, because if they go over by one or two, they have to punish them. Otherwise, it’s just, this isn’t going to work.
Ben: Yeah, I agree with that. mean, it’s going to need to be…a serious policy rather than something toothless. And of course, you know, awaiting further announcements, similar announcements from any of the men’s professional circuits and when they may come, if at all.
Gianni: They’ve got to come. They will come up at some stage. That’s inevitable in my opinion, whether it’s going to be as a reaction to this or they’ll do their own thing, it will be interesting to see.
Ben: I think we talked last week about the opportunity to collect some data here and do a bit of beta testing. So now they have a little bit of data. It’ll be interesting as they continue to gather some more if it’s similar. Yeah, it’s tough to see them not needing to do something, wanting to do something. would be, the optics of that would not be great.
Gianni: With the threat of taking shots on the PGA tour, like that’s a big impact into people’s paycheck at the end of the week, it’s costing them spots. I can’t think of anything more they could do. So the LPGA has really gone strong there with the threat of penalties.
Ben: Yeah, mean, shots are the of the essence. know, it’s been we hear it talked about ad nauseum, you know, “every shot counts,” that type of thing. End of the year, this versus that. So it’s a real penalty. And yeah, I mean, credit to them, but very interesting to see to see folks picking up the pace. would be I’d be interested to see or to hear kind of internally what the messaging has been like to the players sort of, you know? This is all for the greater good. This is this is for the future of our product here. This is what the audience wants. And without an audience, we don’t have anything. You know, is that kind of what’s being communicated with the subtext being, “Hey, don’t complain about this?”

Not Another Golf Show: TGL, launch season mayhem, PGA Show

The plague came to Dublin and Gianni fell victim. Having narrowly beaten the Black Death, the guys are back to give their impressions of the TGL with two matches down. The deluge of equipment releases and impending PGA Show are also discussed as well as absolutely a surefire, guaranteed betting pick for The American Express.
Check out an excerpt of the conversation from around the 8-minute mark regarding the TGL, below.
Ben: The TGL got kicked off and we’re now a couple of weeks into this experiment enterprise, all of the above. I watched the first couple of matches. But interested to hear what you think about it, Gianni.
Gianni: Yeah, I think there’s some cool elements to it. I think the lights and people are cool. People, some people don’t like this sort of stuff. I like it. I like the lights, the arena. I think the walk-on music is kind of cool. Tiger having Serena Williams in this corner was pretty badass. I feel like it would be a great, a great tournament or whatever, a league in the off-season, but there is no off-season. So it just feels a bit strange that, like, we’re kicking into real golf now and this is ongoing. It’s only just begun to, and I also feel like I don’t see this concept working if there’s no jeopardy. So the players need to at least act more like they care who wins. I think people are going to lose interest quickly if the players are just, they are having a hit and giggle — I think they need to take it a bit more seriously.
Ben: Yeah, I mean, you get two blowout wins slash losses in the first two events. Probably not the way you want to see it starting from a not necessarily integrity, but significance of the competition standpoint, right? I mean, it doesn’t it’s never going to look great when it’s a blowout.
And that just adds to kind of an exhibition feel. And you’re right, you worry that, you know, there’s interest because of the novelty element. Something new, people are tuning in. And then if the golf, if the competition isn’t fairly robust, do you worry that maybe that interest fades a little?
Gianni: Yeah, but it is early days and I think I do like some of the modern elements to it. I think the crowd bit is cool. think it’s like nice and condensed by all, too. But it’s like they’re getting involved. I like the music. I like how they, the crowd are sort of heckling a little bit on some of the, well, like Justin Rose, who did shut up the crowd after he made the putt, but like they wanted to see Tiger’s team win, obviously, but it was a drubbing.
Ben: Yeah, I don’t know how much it matters how poorly or well in this case poorly Tiger plays. I mean, he’s certainly there, you know, largely in an entertainment capacity, I think. I don’t think it’s important that he plays at a high level specifically, but I do agree generally, you want there to be more competition. I think a series of blowouts is probably, you know, if this continues. the worst possible start from a competitive standpoint for the league. I mean, do you agree?
Gianni: Yeah, it’s never a good thing, that, but these teams are pretty close in talent, I’d say. But yeah, it’s always gonna be tricky to get some momentum when it’s just two massive blowout wins. And then of course it’s gonna descend into, let’s have fun because it’s over early. So maybe that had to do with, maybe I’m wrong in the fact that I think some of the players don’t really care who wins, but we’ll see as it goes forward in the next few weeks.
