PGA Tour pro provides short game blueprint to break 100, 90 and 80

Micahel Kim is well known for his sharp insights on social media where he often pulls back the curtain on life on the PGA Tour, and this week the 32-year-old has provided some golden advice for amateurs looking to break 100, 90 or even 80 on the course.

Taking to X, Kim provided his short game blueprint mapped out below.

Break 100

  • Use your putter whenever possible. 56 (degree) if not.
  • For the bump and run with a 56 (degree) wedge: Feet together. Feet about 1ft from the ball. Hands ahead of the ball and feel like it’s the body doing all the work. No hands no wrist. Don’t worry about getting it super close. Focus on good contact. (For good contact hands have to stay ahead and head to stay tall)

Break 90

  • Practice the bump and run with 56 but also a medium trajectory shot.
  • Medium trajectory shot: Shaft straight vertical at set up. Open face. Ball position middle. Keep hands there and it’s a turn and turn. Still no wrist. Ok to hit slightly behind it. Feet still close to each other.
  • Bunker: Open the face a decent bit. Ball position just left of center. Practice entering into the sand at the spot you want it.

Break 80

  • It’s not about adding more shots. Get really good at the basic bump and the mid traj shots. Even for me, that’s about 90% of the short game shots I hit.
  • Read the lie: Into the grain, down grain? Soft or firm underneath. Use your practice swing to gauge the lie. That’ll help determine the type of swing to make. If you need a super spinner or a flop, you made a mistake on your second shot.
  • Bunker: Practice a chunk and run 56 (degree) and a softer higher 60 (degree).

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

Kristoffer Reitan held his nerve at Quail Hollow on Sunday to claim his first PGA Tour victory and the $3.6 million winner’s check that came with it. The Norwegian fended off a packed leaderboard on a dramatic final day, with Rickie Fowler and Nicolai Højgaard both taking home $1.76 million for their runner-up finishes.
