Lead Tape Report: Finau, Simpson’s slabs at the Truist Championship

Quail Hollow Club is the site of the Truist Championship this week on the PGA Tour. This version of Quail Hollow has been a mainstay on the PGA Tour since 2002. The club also hosted the Kemper Open from 1969 to 1979. This week is a signature event on the PGA Tour this season, the 6th of 8 to be played. Club adjustments are underway with the PGA Championship on the horizon, and plenty of lead tape as well. Let’s take a look at this week’s Lead Tape Report from Charlotte, North Carolina.

Webb Simpson 

A member of Quail Hollow Club in his own right, Webb Simpson tees it up this week at the Truist. His best showing at Quail is a runner-up finish in 2015. Taking a look at the bag here, we see the Odyssey Square to Square putter with just a bit of lead tape on the sole. It is to be determined if this lead tape is more for adding weight to the putter head or helping the putter look a certain way at address. Webb has predominantly used a mallet his whole career, but this is the first time I’ve seen the Square to Square model. 

Also, take a look at the irons. Alistair Cameron caught up with Webb to ask about his custom irons. He has an iron weaker than the traditional setup with the new number stamped on the club. Love seeing that level of custom for the players’ needs.

Tony Finau

Love seeing Tony’s irons covered with tape! He’s taking ownership of his feel and seeing the performance. These irons have a first-class ticket to Slab City! Along with his set of irons, the Nike Vapor Pro driving iron is still in his bag. This club came out in 2016, some serious lasting power.

Finau turned some heads this week on the practice green with a Ping PLD long putter. First time seeing this in action this week on the property, but it could just be for testing as well. His last appearance at Quail Hollow was a tie for 19th in the PGA Championship.

Rickie Fowler

Rickie is seen here with his Cobra 3DP-RF irons, with added swing weight. The tape is primarily on the shorter irons for a little more feel at impact. Quail Hollow is the site of Rickie’s first win on the PGA Tour at Quail Hollow in 2012. This season has been solid for Fowler as well, making 8 of 10 cuts and 6 top 25’s. Currently in 30th place in the FedEx Cup, Fowler is back where good memories live, aiming to be inside the top 30 for the Tour Championship come playoff time. 

Justin Thomas

No tape here, but noticing something new here for the 2017 PGA Champion at Quail Hollow, Justin Thomas has a Cameron Young-inspired Scotty Cameron T-9.5 putter. A familiar neck on the putter, like the Futura 5.5 he has used over the years. Seeing this prototype graphite Xperimental Scotty Cameron putter shaft is a first for me. This putter is paired with his traditional SuperStroke Pistol Tour 1.0 grip. In the last couple of weeks, we have seen Justin use his blade putter and the traditional mallet he has used through the years. Sometimes you just need a refreshed look at the putting surfaces, and a few options will get that sorted.

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.

Kristoffer Reitan held his nerve at Quail Hollow on Sunday to claim his first PGA Tour victory and the $3.6 million winner’s check that came with it. The Norwegian fended off a packed leaderboard on a dramatic final day, with Rickie Fowler and Nicolai Højgaard both taking home $1.76 million for their runner-up finishes.
