Five Tied For Lead At AT&T National

Tiger Woods struggled in the first round of his inaugural AT&T National with a 4-over 74. Five players are tied atop the leaderboard at 4-under 66.

Choi, Stuart Appleby, and Joe Ogilvie all made it around Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD in 66 strokes to tie for the lead after first round action.

 Tournament host Tiger Woods struggled a bit in his round with seven bogeys and four birdies for a spot in 77th place and 7 strokes back. Woods was delayed after just two holes, and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing since he bogeyed them both. Tiger was successful in hitting 78% of his greens in regulation, but unfortunately his putter was stone cold. He finished the day with 34 putts and T109 of 120 for total putts.

"I never got the speed right," said Woods. "All of my putts I missed were short — way short, actually. It was a struggle. I could not get a ball to the hole. Towards the end there I tried to actually place some iron shots above the holes to at least make it a little bit easier because I just struggled. I just struggled hitting the putts hard enough."

With a newborn child at home, and working to put this tournament together in just 116 days, there is no wonder why Woods may not have had much time to adjust to the slower greens compared with the lighting quick greens Woods last saw at Oakmont.

Just 28 players were able to break par on this difficult course. The long par fours and tight fairways make it difficult to score from anywhere but the fairways.

Tournament co-leader Joe Ogilvie said, "Well, pretty much every time I hit in the rough, I made bogey, which most people are probably going to do this week and then every time I hit it in the fairway I had a pretty good chance for birdie. This tournament is going to be won or lost hitting it in the fairway, so whoever hits the most fairways is going to have a pretty good chance."

Oglivie’s theory was proven on Thursday by the 51 year old Chicken Hawk, Fred Funk. Lurking just one stroke off of the lead, Funk averaged 275 yards with the driver, yet he was also hit nearly 80% of his fairways.

"When they put the deep rough like they have this week, that’s my equalizer. The harder the golf course, the better for me in my opinion. The harder the holes, the better for me. When I’ll make well, I like to see 18 holes that are set up like the 6th hole here. I would win a lot of tournaments"

 When asked about his staying power and ability to compete on the regular TOUR, Funk said ,"I don’t know what really has allowed me to have the best part of my career this late in my career. It’s satisfying, and that’s why I’m staying out here and I’m here this week and staying out on the regular TOUR because I feel like I’m still competitive out here and I want to see how long I can stay competitive."

 Tiger Woods now has his work cut out for him if he wants to win his own inaugural tournament. Tiger said, "Well, I’ve got three days to make it up. You want to be ahead at 72 holes. I have 54 holes to get myself back in this tournament and hopefully I can do it."

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.
