Furyk Aces Canadian Open

Jim Furyk birdied two of the first three holes Sunday and then knocked his 5 iron tee shot on the fourth hole into the cup from 209 yards away for the lead. He went on to defeat Vijay Singh by a single shot when Mr. Singh’s birdie putt to tie on the 18th hole raced five feet by the hole. The difference for the week was the par 3 fourth, which Mr. Furyk played in only 7 strokes over the four days of the tournament while Mr. Singh required 15 shots over the same span. The win was Mr. Furyk’s first in the last twenty events he’s played and allowed him to become the first repeat champion of the Canadian Open since Jim Ferrier in 1951.

"To be able to fly a 5-iron back there on the fringe, have it release out and go in the hole is, obviously, a special bonus." The fourth proved the crucial hole in the tournament as Mr. Furyk played the hole in 7 strokes over four days, while runner up Vijay Singh needed 15 strokes. "Eight strokes, that’s a huge turnaround on one hole," said Furyk, the first player to successfully defend a Canadian Open title since Jim Ferrier in 1951.

Mr. Furyk bogeyed the 18th hole to make the finish interesting and was obviously relieved when Mr. Singh’s birdie attempt to force a playoff scooted five feet by the hole. Mr. Furyk also removed all doubt whether he’d return next year to again defend his title. "We’ll see you next year," the crowd favorite told the cheering fans gathered around the 18th green Sunday for the trophy presentation.

The question in Hamilton was whether Furyk would return to the event, stuck in a tough new schedule slot after the British Open and before the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship. "Wasn’t the first question this year, but still got asked," Furyk said. "I really feel like you should always come back and defend your championship. I had a lot of people thank me for coming back, which to me is kind of like, `I appreciate it, but I feel like it’s thanking me for something that you should do.’ If that makes sense?" Which indeed it does.

Phil Mickelson made history at the 2021 PGA Championship on Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course. At 50, he became the oldest player to win a major, breaking Julius Boros’s record. Starting the final round with a slim lead, Lefty faced tough competition from Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen. He pulled ahead with key birdies and a standout 366-yard drive on the 16th hole. Finishing 6 under par and two shots ahead, Mickelson claimed his sixth major and second PGA Championship. Many saw his win as an inspiring comeback, showing that experience and determination can still lead to victory in professional golf — and, sometimes, age is just a number.

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
