Sabbatini Leads Bridgestone

Rory Sabbatini shot two over par 72 to lead Tiger Woods (69) by a single shot heading into the final round of the Bridgestone Invitational. In a rematch of the final pairing at the Wachovia, which was won by Mr. Woods, the pair will be joined by Kenny Perry who may act more as a referee than a contender. Zach Johnson was a victim of the rough at Firestone CC, which has produced the highest scoring leader after three rounds since being added to the World Championship series in 1999, when he dropped six shots in two holes, including an eight which required him to hit three shots to move the ball twenty feet. Ugly. On a course playing this difficult, even the long list of players in fourth place at one over par could have a chance of catching the leaders.

Rory Sabbatini gets a redo in the final pairing with Tiger Woods on Sunday at Firestone CC. Mr. Sabbatini shot a two over par 72 to top the leaderboard at 4 under par 206, a single shot ahead of Mr. Woods, whose one under par 69 left him alone in second. The referee for this return match will be Kenny Perry as the third member of the final group. "I think it’s going to be a stormy day altogether,” Sabbatini said with a smirk, a reference to nasty weather in the forecast that pushed up the starting times Sunday, and memories of his verbal sparring with Woods this spring.

Firestone proved to be the winner Saturday, with the best score Aaron Baddeley’s 67. Zach Johnson dropped six shots on two holes, including an eight in which he went right rough, left rough, bunker, over the green, then three shots to move the ball twenty feet onto the putting surface where he made the four footer. "I tried to play the percentages on every single shot I hit. And I made a 4-footer for an 8,” Johnson said. "A good 8.” Pretty ugly percentages, eh.

Justin Leonard, whose 71 left him in a tie for fourth with Mr. Baddeley and Hunter Mahan, had this to say; "You look at some of these pins and you just start to laugh,” Leonard said. "But it’s supposed to rain tomorrow, soften up a little bit. And if that happens, we might see some better scores.” I think if it does rain making that nasty rough wet should bring even more adventure into the picture.

A diplomatic Mr. Woods was asked about the rematch with Mr. Sabbatini; "Obviously, Rory is full of confidence,” Woods said. "He believes in what he can do, and there’s a lot to be said for that. You’ve got to believe in what you can do out there. I’ve got to go out there and do my business, and I’m sure he’ll probably do the same.”

Sunday afternoon should prove entertaining on a couple of levels, making all the more enjoyable for golf fans.

Phil Mickelson made history at the 2021 PGA Championship on Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course. At 50, he became the oldest player to win a major, breaking Julius Boros’s record. Starting the final round with a slim lead, Lefty faced tough competition from Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen. He pulled ahead with key birdies and a standout 366-yard drive on the 16th hole. Finishing 6 under par and two shots ahead, Mickelson claimed his sixth major and second PGA Championship. Many saw his win as an inspiring comeback, showing that experience and determination can still lead to victory in professional golf — and, sometimes, age is just a number.

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
