Presidents Cup: Day 2 Recap

Published

on

On a rain-soaked Friday session that included a 2 hour and 34 minute delay and only two finished matches, the United States maintained its 1-point lead over the International Team in the Presidents Cup.

Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley, who were on the losing end on Day 1 against Canadian Graham DeLaet and Australian Jason Day, turned Day 2 into a rout for the U.S. squad. Going into the 5th hole 1 down, the U.S. Team caught fire with an eagle at the par 5 and then proceeded to birdie four of the next six holes to take a commanding lead that would ultimately end in a 4 and 3 U.S. victory.

“Yesterday we just felt a fraction off,” Mickelson said. “But today we were on, starting on hole 5, we played some of our best golf together.”

But the International Team countered with their own 4 and 3 victory. South Africans Ernie Els and Brendon De jonge made six birdies and an eagle trumping the U.S. duo of Bill Haas and Hunter Mahan.

When play was finally called due to darkness the unfinished matches were as follows:

  • Steve Stricker and Jordan Spieth (USA) have a 3-up lead over Brenden Grace and Richard Sterne through 14 holes.
  • Angel Cabrera and Marc Leishman (INT) came to life on the back nine to go 1 up on Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker through 13 holes.
  • Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar (USA) birdied six of the first seven holes to take a 3-up lead over Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel after 12 holes.
  • Adam Scott and and Hideki Matsuyama (INT) have taken advantage of two birdies and two U.S. bogies to have 4-up advantage over Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson through 11 holes.

Play will resume Saturday morning at 7:35 a.m. ET on Golf Channel with NBC picking up coverage at 8 a.m. EST.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
