CAL standout Michael Kim turns pro

Published

on

University of California golfer Michael Kim has decided to forgo his junior year of college to turn professional.

Kim, the NCAA Division I Player of the Year and the No. 4-ranked amateur, did not earn full status on the Web.com Tour’s Q-School finals last week at PGA West, but his T56 finish will earn him conditional status on the PGA Tour’s foremost developmental tour.

“I’m really excited. I’ve been waiting for this for a while now, and I’m excited to take the next step,” Kim said. “I’m beyond excited to play in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, which is basically my home course.”

Kim made the cut in both PGA Tour events he competed in last year, finishing T17 at the U.S. Open at Merion  in June and T38 at the Greenbrier Classic in July. He has also been awarded a sponsor’s exemption to the Farmers Insurance Open in late January where he will make his first professional start.

Kim was born in Seoul South Korea, but attended Torrey Pines High School in San Diego and now resides in Del Mar, Calif. He has been been one of amateur golf’s most notable stars for years, and should have no problem earning future sponsors exemptions in 2014.

“I just felt like it was time to move on. I feel like I’ve accomplished everything I can in college, other than a national championship.”

I used to hit balls by this kid at the Del Mar Golf Center driving range; he seemed destined to play professionally. I wish him the best!!

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
