What can we expect at this weeks playoffs? Another showdown like last week, maybe this week instead of Tiger and Phil we will see Tiger and Rory or Tiger and Ernie.

Should be another interesting week of golf, including the pressure on the players who are on the bubble to get into the top 30, and attempting to qualify for that final leg in Atlanta at the Tour Championship, and the $10 million prize. It should be another exciting week and I for one am anxious to see how it unfolds.

Week three of the FedEx Cup, the PGA tours version of the playoffs moves to the Chicago area, and will be contested at the Cog Hill Golf and Country Club in Lemont, Illinois. At par 71 and 7,326 yards Cog Hill should provide a great challenge and super setting for the remaining 70 players in the playoffs.

Be on the look out for some interesting story lines this week including Phil’s comments and subsequent withdrawal, Ernie’s comments on the tour’s elite, Tiger looking to surge to the top of the heap, the remaining golfers from 31-70 trying to jostle their way into contention for the final round of the FedEx Cup.

Phil Mickelson made some headlines earlier in the week after winning at the Deutsche Bank, where he indicated displeasure with Tour commissioner Tim Finchem’s new FedEx baby, saying, "My frustration from this past year came from asking for a couple of things in the FedEx Cup that weren’t done, and not feeling that bad if I happen to miss (an event)." He then released this statement on Tuesday, "This decision was not an easy one to make and in no way is meant as disrespectful to the tour, or sending a message to anyone. I’ve talked for weeks about needing to find a balance between my game, my business affairs and my family, and now is the time for me to take some time off." Although this version was slightly nicer than what he said following his victory last week, mentioning Tim Finchem and a request that he had made.

Also making noise in this arena was Ernie Els who recently publicly exposed a growing rift between the tour’s elite and the PGA Tour, “I just feel in certain ways we’ve kind of grown apart a little bit, especially the players and the commissioner’s office," said the South African. "We’ve grown apart because of all these big decisions that were made without the real knowledge of the players." Apparently this is a growing sentiment from the players and some of the final outputs of the FedEx cup, including the 10 million dollar annuity, who some say “they hope they are around to enjoy it”.

Tiger Woods, who with a strong showing last week has vaulted into the number the number 3 position poised to claim the top spot with another great finish this week. A three time winner at Cog Hill and runner up each of the past two seasons, and being the number one player in the world, he has to be the favorite this week. Keep an eye on Steve Stricker, who had another solid performance last week and is hanging in there at the number two spot on the points list.

Another interesting aspect of this week’s event will be seeing who from the 31-70 pack will emerge to bump someone that is already in the safe zone. It is fairly certain that most of the higher positioned players, like 1-10 or 15 will be safe and don’t really have to worry, but the players in that 20-30 zone are going to be under some serious pressure to perform and make it to Atlanta. Bubble Boys like, 30th-place Jonathan Byrd and31st-place David Toms are separated by a mere 271 points. These gentlemen will be under tremendous pressure to make that final 30, and maybe we will bear witness to some amazing golf. Also keep an eye out for guys like Sean O’Hair, who is 58^th in points and Bubba Watson, who is 41^st, both could be poised for a big move.

WITB Time Machine: Phil Mickelson’s winning WITB, 2021 PGA Championship

Phil Mickelson made history at the 2021 PGA Championship on Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course. At 50, he became the oldest player to win a major, breaking Julius Boros’s record. Starting the final round with a slim lead, Lefty faced tough competition from Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen. He pulled ahead with key birdies and a standout 366-yard drive on the 16th hole. Finishing 6 under par and two shots ahead, Mickelson claimed his sixth major and second PGA Championship. Many saw his win as an inspiring comeback, showing that experience and determination can still lead to victory in professional golf — and, sometimes, age is just a number.

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
