USGA Redefines Club Adjustability Rule

The USGA released an annoucement last week stating they have accepted a proposed amendment to the adjustability ruling and now allowing differnt types of adjustability other than only weight modifications.

Clearly the impact of new fitting technologies has not been lost on golf’s pre-eminent ruling body. Although the USGA has recently drawn some major criticisim for its proposal concerning maximum size of wedge and iron grooves. Much to the chagrin of amateur everywhere, this rule appeared to be a response to the current state of "bomb and gouge" that has dominated the elite levels of the game. However, this new ruling appears to be a major benefit to amateur and weekend golfers.

Dick Rugge, the USGA’s Senior Technical Director explained the reason for the amendment, "PGA Tour players have long had the opportunity to have their clubs adjusted or modified quickly and often. This has allowed them to fit their clubs to their swings as they feel the need to do so. By relaxing the rules to permit club adjustability, average golfers can enjoy similar fitting. After we informed club manufacturers that we were looking into relaxing this rule, some of them told us that allowing more club adjustment would allow them to create new types of golf clubs that could help average golfers." The new rule will go in effect January 1, 2008 and as with the previous rule, no changes to a club will be allowed to be made mid round. Although under the current rules, adjustable mechanisms are allowed, they are not approved until permanently epoxied into place.

Although it was humbly introduced, it appears this will have repercussions throughout the golf industry. With the success interchangeable fitting systems such as Callaway’s OptiFit, TaylorMade’s SelectFit, and with several other manufacturers poised to roll out their own systems, it appears the basic way golf clubs will be bought and solid is poised to change forever. Gone will be the days of buying driver after driver and searching for that "holy grail." The traditional "guess work" golfers used to attempt in effort to gain an added yard of roll will be replaced with a fitting for the shaft that matches a golfer’s swing and then a club head that works. Attach them with the appropriate fitting system and go play. However, the opposite side of the argument also leaves a grey area. Until now, it took a fair amount of tools, experience, and ability to perform proper club work. Although proper fitting will still be as crucial as ever, the days of the "cut and glue" expert seem to be waning.

    The ability to try different heads and shafts might impact the custom fitting business. It could be good for custom fitters as this will allow them to quickly find the right combination of head and shafts without having to cut and glue. It could be bad for custom fitting business where it would be easier for the golf hobbyist to try their own combinations without the need for custom fittings. It will be interesting to see what becomes of this.

2026 PGA Championship betting odds

Scottie Scheffler leads the betting ahead of the second major championship of the year, with the World Number One a +345 favorite to get his hands on a second PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy who won the Masters back in April is a +800 shot to complete half of the calendar slam at Aronimink Golf Club this week, while Jordan Spieth can be backed at +5900 to become a career grand slam winner.
