Reed holds on, wins Humana Challenge

Published

For the fourth day in a row, the skies in La Quinta, Calif., were clear and the air was warm, making for perfect scoring conditions. The final round was played on the Palmer course at PGA West, a course that has seen its fair share of large final-round leads relinquished. Last year, Brian Gay came back from a six-shot deficit in the final round to beat Charles Howell in a playoff, and in 1999 David Duval recorded a final-round 59 to make up a seven-shot deficit.

Patrick Reed held a seven-shot lead over Charley Hoffman and Brendon Todd at 27-under to begin this year’s final round. Reed recorded three consecutive rounds of 63 the first three days, making just two bogies to go along with 25 birdies, two eagles and get this, 25 pars – the same amount of birdies as pars– through 54 holes. The 23-year-old had been largely absent from leaderboards since August, when he captured his first PGA Tour win at the Wyndham Championship.

Reed started Sunday’s round much slower than he had the previous three days. He played his first nine holes only 1-under, letting veterans Ryan Palmer (26-under), Zach Johnson (25-under) and Justin Leonard (25-under) back into the mix. He continued to tread water on the back nine, shooting even, but his final-round 71 was good enough to earn him his second PGA Tour win.

The win was a special one for Reed and his wife, Justine, who usually caddies for him but has been sidelined for the start of the year as she gets ready for the birth of the couple’s first this spring. Nevertheless, Justine Reed still walked every hole of the tournament, keeping an eye on both Reed and her brother Kessler, who has taken her spot as caddie.

Reed moved to eighth in the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup rankings with the win, and also inside the top 50 on the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time in his career. Moving inside of the top 50 means that Reed is now eligible to play in WGC events, all of which guarantee prize money to those participating. With the win, Reed joins Rory Mcilroy and Harris English as the only players under 25 with multiple PGA Tour wins.

Can’t believe these guys can be this good at their age. I can’t remember what I was doing when I was 23yrs old (probably partying too much) let alone making such a name for myself as a professional golfer. Congrats to Patrick Reed for the 2nd win and to him and his wife for the pending addition to their family. Nothing is more enjoyable (or stressful! haha!) than watching your child grow, so enjoy every minute.
