GolfWRX is live this week from Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., for the 2014 Northern Trust Open. Riviera, which is known as “Hogan’s Alley,” earned the nickname by surrendering wins to Ben Hogan in two L.A. Opens and the 1948 U.S. Open at the venue within an 18-month span. It has been the home of the Los Angeles Open since 1929.

The 2014 field features 16 of the top 30 players in the current world rankings, including Jason Dufner, Matt Kuchar, Dustin Johnson and 2013 Rookie of the Year Jordan Spieth. Blazing hot Jimmy Walker enters the tournament looking for his fourth win of 2014 after a victory at last week’s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. 2013 U.S. Open champion Justin Rose, who hasn’t hit a competitive shot since mid-December at the Thailand Golf Championship, is set to make his 2014 debut.

John Merrick, who played his college golf nearby at UCLA and lives in the Los Angeles area, returns home this week as the defending champion after winning in a playoff over Charlie Beljan at last year’s Northern Trust Open.

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
