McIlroy follows 63 with a 78 in Round 2 at the Memorial

Published

on

After opening with a 63 in round one, Rory McIlroy recorded a 78 during the second round at the Memorial.

McIlroy’s 43 on the back nine (his first nine holes) were the result of three consecutive double bogeys. To accomplish this feat, he found the water on No. 14 and double hit a chip on No. 15. Perhaps even more incredible than the three consecutive double bogeys was his ability to bounce back on the next hole, where he holed out to save par. McIlroy smoothed out his play with two birdies and two bogeys on the 12 remaining holes, ending his day at 6-over.

A seemingly horrific day could have been much worse had he not remained calm, which allows McIlroy to remain only nine shots back of Round 2 leader Paul Casey (12-under)

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.
