John Daly calls PGA Tour drug testing “a big joke”
On Tuesday night, John Daly went on the SiriusXM’s “Hit It Hard with John Daly,” and said PGA Tour drug testing is not random, calling it “a big joke.”
Radio host Patrick Meagher asked Daly if he thought drug testing was random on the PGA Tour.
“Not at all,” Daly told host Meagher. “I’m gonna play at 1:50 on Friday so they’re [going to] get me about 6:52, 7 o’clock.”
Daly carded his first top-10 finish on the PGA Tour since 2012 last week at the Puerto Rico Open, and is scheduled to play in the Valspar Championship this week. He tees off at 9:05 a.m. EST on Thursday (and predicts to be tested around 7 o’clock on Friday).
“Wait, you’re telling me you already know you’re gonna get tested?” Meagher asked Daly.
[quote_box_center]”Oh yeah, this’ll be the fifth or sixth year in a row I’m going to get drug tested [at this event],” Daly said. “It’s the biggest bulls—, I’m sorry, I’m gonna say it, fine me. I don’t care what you do, fix ’em right now, fine me, but I’m tired of it. [/quote_box_center]
“It’s not random; it’s big a joke. This whole drug testing is a joke,” Daly said.
Daly then called out PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem and chief of operations Andy Pazder, and claimed other golfers “had it made” with drug testing protocol.

[quote_box_center]”I know when I’m getting drug tested,” he said. “That’s sad. They all know when we’re getting drug tested. And for you dopers and all that s— on the PGA Tour, you know you’re getting drug tested, you got it made! You got it made! And I’m tired of it.”[/quote_box_center]
He also claimed that the PGA Tour doesn’t take drug testing seriously.
“Like Major League Baseball and NFL take it seriously,” Daly said. “[The PGA Tour thinks] it’s a joke.”

GolfWRX is on site for the second major of 2026: The PGA Championship from Aronimink in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
The tournament’s location, just outside Philadelphia, and its status as a major championship mean GolfWRXers are in for a treat: WITBs from a strong field, custom gear celebrating the PGA Championship, and the rich culture of the City of Brotherly Love — we have noted a relative absence of cheesesteak-themed items thus far this week, but most of the rest of the usual suspects are well represented.

Thanks John for being honest regarding the PGA’s drug testing facade. I’m amazed how fast some of the younger golfers are building muscle mass (I will not name who). If the tour followed drug testing protocols that the Tour de France and Olympics utilize, we would be seeing different outcomes from some of the top golfers.
Yes, it does make a difference…and some golfers will take advantage of that “edge” needed to win.

My nephew was born premature and steroids saved his life. My mother has rheumatoid arthritis and steroids give her the ability to move and hold her grandson.
Their are people who eat a peanut, go into anaphylactic shock and die. People who take to much aspirin over to long a period of time can suffer liver and kidney failure. The point?
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANY MEDICATION AND POISON IS IN THE DOSAGE.
TOO MUCH ANYTHING IS BAD FOR YOU, EVEN iCE CREAM.
STEROIDS ARE A MEDICINE THAT CAN HELP INDIVIDUALS TO RECOVER FROM PHYSICAL STRESS AND WARD OF INJURY.

Years ago HBO ran a special on Steroids and it opened with the doctor saying, biggest problem with steroids is “They Work”. totally agree on the comment the difference between any medication and poison is the dosage.

I’ve never understood why Caffeine and Alcohol are permitted while HGH and Steroids are banned. Golf is 90% mental anyway, its not like taking HGH or steroids is going to help you score or putt better when Caffeine can help you focus and improve cognition and alcohol can help calm your nerves. It doesn’t make any sense to me.

I think the answer is the same as baseball.. People have said for years that steroids will not help you hit a 98mph fastball or a 93mph cutter, but it will turn a long fly ball into a home run and it will speed recovery.. In golf I would compare this to quality of the tee shots during the final stretch of a major in June, will it help you hit a fairway? No. Will it turn a 5 iron approach on a long par 4 into a 7 or 8 iron? You decide but I would argue absolutely, and that is a huge advantage
And Daly is probably half truth/half smoke, but the reality is that in a post Tiger post Phil landscape the PGA is desperate. Why impose a lifetime ban on a noted addict like DJ? Sad to see the lack of integrity but it’s not a human interest story, it’s a $$$ story..

Four years ago, I personally heard a PGA Tour player in my gym asking trainers where he could get HGH. He said he knew others on tour using HGH and other PED’s. There are and have been PED’s on that tour, and tour officials know it. They will occasionally throw out a sacrificial lamb as an outlier to appear to be fully engaged in running a clean tour. It’s all image.

Yeah I’m probably in the minority here and I’m sure I’ll catch some heat for this, but I don’t think they should have drug testing on the PGA Tour. These guy’s are independent contractors really no different than the guy who comes to paint your house or cut your lawn. Do you require them to be drug tested, no? Some people will say what about PED’s, my answer will be, define a PED. Is it only steroids, HGH, or some other type of muscle building drug. Why isn’t smoking a PED, it helps calm a guys nerves? Same with alcohol but they wouldn’t cause a failed test. Why was it legal for Tiger or whom ever else that’s had Lasik surgery, That’s performance enhancing? Same goes for guys who wear glasses. The long putter was deemed performance enhancing and now it will soon be illegal. It’s funny how we decide whats acceptable performance enhancement based off certain people morale’s and what’s not.

Don’t know if I’m also in the minority but yeah I agree. These guys aren’t in public service. They don’t hold the fate of the free world in their hands. They play golf. I understand the need to test for PEDs but why should I care if a guy/girl uses recreational drugs in their off time any more than I should care if another celebrity does? If they develop a problem that reflects poorly on the Tour or their sponsors maybe you can argue that that person needs help but otherwise why is it my business.

Because they are role models and “athletes”. First, people pay money to watch profesional golf events, and I doubt anyone wants to pay someone’s salary so they can dope. Secondly, they are role models to all of us, including kids. How many kids in the drive/chip/put contest dressed EXACTLY like the on tour pros? Almost all. They will do what the pros do. Lastly, they are “athletes”. We talk about power, precision, joints, mobility, explosiveness- sounds like the words to describe most athletic endevors. We need hoest participats who gain an edge through training and practice, not through banned substances.

Totally disagree if one wants to be a roll model great do it never thought a Record Star, Movie Star or a Sports Star owes any fan anything….If they choose to be a jerk oh well. And how many kids want to dress up like a player that takes a 12 during a pro tournament by hitting shot after shot into a lake or gets drunk and tosses away a second place check in a gambling casino and brags about it (note same fine example of a pro golfer that calls drug testing a joke).

I listened to this live yesterday and it was the radio show equivalency of a train wreck. Him and all his buddies were drunk at Hooters and they let him do a live show!!! I was shocked when they came back from the first commercial break and let him keep talking. That said, I couldn’t turn the dial I had to keep listening.

How many times did we read the last 3 years Daly saying he did not drink any more….someone needs to teach him the differnce between any more or any less. Don’t we all love a two time major winner that sets up shop in the parking lot of a Hooters during the Masters to sell you his picture and autograph.

Mock JD all you like. He’s a two time major winner, is one of the most recogniseable people to ever play the game and isn’t afraid to speak his mind. He’s out playing golf for a living and we are all reading about it on a websites message board. Think he’s losing sleep over petty insults from people like us?

Mar 11, 2015 at 12:43 pm
Well you can all not like the messenger but isn’t this really about the message. If what Daly is saying is true… the PGA needs to get their house in order. That’s what this story should be about… not a rock throwing contest at Daly… despite that fact he has a glass house for sure.

I think if your gonna drug test, illegal drugs need to be in the test along with PED’s. I am glad someone finally called out the PGA on this.

You obviously have no clue what the hell you are talking about. Daly is not hurting for money. The media loves to throw his bad habits out there for all to see but they don’t tell you how much he has won on gambling. Easy to hide behind a screen and throw stones but at least get both sides before you get on your soap box.

Mar 12, 2015 at 10:22 pm
If Daly has so much money why dosen’t he spend some on a caddie that knows what he is doing, or better still a few bucks on some lessons could not hurt. I cannot wait, like Daly, till he gets out on the Champions Tour, then when he starts scoring in the 80’s maybe the PGA tour will put its foot down.
