Along with the new T-MB 716 irons, we also spotted Titleist’s new AP1 and AP2 716 irons on the range at the Quicken Loans National on Monday. Jason Bohn was testing a combo set of AP2 (6-PW) and AP1 (4, 5) irons.

Based on the photos, the AP2 716 irons are forged. Also, the 5-7 irons are stamped with “Tungsten,” while 8-PW are not.

@mrmikeac: “I’ve been Anti-Titleist for years and years and years (outside of Vokey, of course). With that being said, HOLY BEGEEZUS the GT3 driver is an absolute NUCLEAR MONSTER! This thing blew my G430 10K Max out of the water in every single category. Forgiveness is the biggest thing that stands out of me, the 3 model has always been one of the less forgiving models in the past but this GT3 can take bad shot after bad shot and still end up in the fairway, I think a ton of that has to do with the adjustability, it’s actually effective. Feel and sound is perfect, that solid crack is so addicting to hear and when you hit it out the screws this thing can absolutely bomb it. Titleist, I’m sorry for doubting you. You have converted me.”

Looks like a lot of the negative comments are based on how these will look from the back and in the bag instead of over the ball. From the pictures that would best represent what you would see on the course, they look to have a nice setup with the whole face being satin and thin top line with minimal offset. I’m sure a lot of thought and engineering went into these as they are most likely the #1 played model for Titleist. Several pros have already put them into the bag and before you say “they are paid to” they still have a choice as to when they will switch. I’m getting fitted in Oceanside in October in line with the release as I am going to pick up a set. They look great to my eye and can’t wait to game em’

I’m a bit of traditionalist when it comes to irons and have always played Titleist’s. I put off buying a new set this season knowing these would be out later in the year. Sadly the entire 716 range is sadly a big disappointment for me. Too overworked, trying to hard and it seems to have lost the Titleist simplicity. The T-MB look best for me but not a fan of the fugly sole. Here’s hoping they’re refined further before the launch or i will be looking elsewhere for the 2016 season.

Exactly the same here SR. I set my hope on the 716 and for the eye I think it is a dissapointment for me. I hoped for a cleaner, more traditional and less busey look. Without a doubt the club will play fine, but for me the look and feel with irons has the same importance as the way they play. Obviously that is something personal, but as I only switch irons every 4-5 years I do not want to make any concessions. I will go for the MP25 or will wait for the 718, unless the real production of the 716 shows to be different from this prototype and fit my expectations anyway.

I have hit both sets of the new ap1 and ap2 irons at a couple days of prototype testing. My handicap now is a 3.6 now that I’ve been playing for 50 years. I’d recommend that you hit the clubs when you can get your hands on a demo and make your decision then. The look at set up is excellent. The trajectory and distance control (using a pro v1) was clearly consistent and right where I wanted it to be with the ap2 model. I felt the ap1 was the best looking they’ve made that club and it performs great for folks needing some “push” to get the ball airborne with some distance. The look of the heads sitting in the bag is a very personal thing ( I play Epon Forged or Miura baby blades currently) and I will be adding a set of these clubs when they are released. It just made hitting the ball way too easy, fun and consistent and the pro feedback has been amazing. In addition take a look at their new hybrid. I do not carry any in my bag. I seem to hit them easy and well but distance control has always been an issue. With most having very flat sole plates I seem to get “stuck” on the fairway grass sometime causing some of my inconsistent distance. I hit about 30 balls with two of their new hybrids at the prodding of Titleist staff. They’ve designed a new sole plate for this hybrid model and I will be adding 2 in the bag when they are released. I have never hit any hybrid with that kind of ease and control. Not one of my typical “flier” shots. I think they have a winner there. FYI I am not a Titleist employee. I play their driver and pro v1 ball. That’s it. I was super impressed with performance and don’t remember thinking the clubs were ugly as so many are saying they are. But as they say in life “one man’s ceiling is another mans floor.”

Damn, what a bunch of haters…. how can anyone tell anything from a picture. If you demoed the 716 lineup and didn’t like them then you’ve got your opinion. And as for looks I don’t care how a club looks, if it performs best for me it’s in my bag. Every club manufacturer has its shortcomings when it comes to one persons opinion. And yes I play 714 AP2 irons . I will be hitting 716 irons before I give MY opinion .

To me, it seems like another case of Titleist playing catch up to TM. TM had their speed pocket for their drivers way before the wide sole channels were in the 915′, and now TM fans will get such a good chuckle when you compare these 716’s next to the original Rocketbladez irons. Ummmm, but does anyone else see the resemblance with the angular toe cast with the intersecting line on the back of the club?

The problem is the word ‘tungsten’.
Tungsten is well known as a metal used by less skilful golfers because it is dense enough to move weight around low and wide. Brass is a metal used by slightly better players as it is less dense hence less GI assistance.
Titanium, nano weave, gas, Kevlar, these are the words decent WRXers want to see stamped on clubs, because their low density means we don’t need GI features.

With the pros looking like refugees from NASCAR — a logo here, a logo there — I suppose the clubs should match — a stamping here a stamping there. Why stop with tungsten? Let’s identify every metal used by stamping it right there where everyone can see, although I don’t remember anyone ever asking me what my clubs were made of. What ever happened to understated? Is this another manifestation of Trumpism? My main appearance objection, though, is the “thick in the ankles” look of those hosels. However, I’ll bet that if you put a good swing on them they move the ball just fine!

Did NASCAR help design these clubs? Just need a few more logo’s on the club. I’ll stick with the AP2 714 I think it’s kinda nuts to upgrade irons every one or two years anyway. Guess we all get caught up in the hype at some point.

As a 13 to 14 HCP, I like the idea of the AP1 irons, but I don’t like irons that are bright and shine, I prefer a modest satin finish. I play Callaway Apex irons which IMHO are the best looking game improvement iron I’ve ever seen and blow away the looks of these. Additionally, I think these look a little cheap and not nearly as nice as the AP1 714 version. I’ve always preferred the look of the AP2 but I’m not good enough to play that set – so when Callaway came out with the Apex, which looks like the AP2, but plays like the AP1, I was hooked…

Owned 42 sets of irons since 1975 ,most of them last 20 years and all types and brands. Agree the Apex stand alone when comparing looks,distance,forgiveness,playability. Expensive with the F3 Recoils but can understand why.

The ap2 714 are my the best looking irons out there IMO. the 716s look a little weird but seem to be beautiful at address.. as a college student I unfortunately can’t afford any of them

The Ap1’s are reminiscent of the Callaway Diablo from a while back and the Ap2’s the Rocketblades. I guess it is hard to be different these days when most things old are new again.

At address you only see the top line and face and when they are in your bag you only ever see the soles. Honestly, who cares what the back of the it iron looks like? If the performance and feel are there, looks don’t matter.

I think the majority of Titleist’s 2016 range (at least what’s been revealed so far) looks very Japanese-y; the ap2 reminds me of last year’s vg3 forged iron. It’s all swoopy lines and fussy badging. Even the new t-mb looks fussy. I’d definitely go for a set of Mizuno MP5s over any of the new Titleist offerings. I will say this, though- the new AP2 looks really pretty at address. Really pretty.

Kind of reminds me of how car designs went from straight, flowing lines to these diagonal, sharp lines of the rear lights and bumpers that everybody went to after they ran out of nice flowing designs from 4 or 5 years ago.

IMO, look worse than the 714s. Keep it traditional looking or go full blown decking out ala Nike or Tmag, but this… this… ugh.
Also: i though the APs were unsightly, and then i saw a picture of the CB on other site, holy crap.

I told myself that I was not going to upgrade from the 714 ap2 to the 716 ap2. Thanks for making that decision easier Titleist! They aren’t ugly, but they aren’t beautiful either. The only thing that would make me upgrade would be some mind blowing tech in there.
